This may sound foolish, but I've been wondering about this all my life...
My 55 Cub sounds horrible when it is moving in 1st gear. It just makes a really loud "whirrrrrr", like the gears are not meshed very well. It has done it for nearly 40 years and I don't see any metal flakes in the transmission oil. (It has only been my tractor for the past few years, but I've had occasion to drive it around the farm back when I was 10 years old... it made the same noises back then too.)
I'm just wondering if this is typical for the Cub transmission, 2nd and 3rd gears are quiet.

It's probably what's called 'gear rollover noise'.
Nothing serious, just noise created in the transmission by the harmonic frequency of the engine crankshaft.
Spur gears are well known for being noisy. When to be concerned is if that noise gets really loud or it starts popping out of gear.

Thanks, If it is common enough to have it's own name, then I'll just ignore it as best as I can. Fortunately the Cub spends most of it's current life pulling a two-wheel trailer around the farm, so I run it in 2nd and 3rd gear most of the time.

Check the gear oil level in the finals. These are all straight cut gears.
I haven't tried it yet but in the 70 drag race cars in the four speed trannies we added a can of STP to the gear oil in the tranny. This cushioned the teeth on the gears when they meshed.

I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

We used to do the STP treatment also. The only problem with if is when it gets cold that STP will set up like cement in your transmission.

were not noisy from the factory when new. Causes are miss aliened counter-shaft, bad bearings in drive-shaft, worn first and reverse sliding gear.

Re: Is first gear on a Cub always noisy?
Hmmm... perhaps after CubTug I'll have a better idea of just how abnormal the 1st gear noise really is by listening to other tractors running in 1st. It is quite possible 1st got abused early in the tractor's life (fields around here are full of sandstone chunks...probably the best crop that grows here are rocks.)
I don't think I'll dig into the transmission without having a second transmission on hand. I'm still traumatized from overhauling a GM 700R4 a few years ago

Re: Is first gear on a Cub always noisy?
It's always a debate of how noisy is "too noisy." Different people hear things differently, and innocuous to one is intolerable to another.
Being somewhere where you can hear other Cubs and see what others' opinions of the noise levels are will help immensely.
These transmissions are nowhere near as complex as a 700R4.
