Paint Question

Postby CTHusker » Tue Aug 02, 2016 8:23 am

I hope someone can help me out with a paint question. I am looking to paint my '61 Cub Lo Boy (not series) and want to match the original color. From my guess, my cub was made in July of that year and the paint code appears to be IH201. In October of that same year they went to the darker IH2150 paint code. I asked around and nobody can find that IH201 paint color. So, my question is can anyone tell me if this is the correct color and where might I find the paint? I also found that Farmall used paint code 50, would this be the same color (as the IH201) under the Farmall name? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Red changed from 50 to 201 in late 1956. The decision seemed to imply the color was the same and just the number changed. The change from 201 to 2150 happened as you said in '61. That decision described 2150 as "slightly brighter", not darker.

By '61, the default color for a Lo-Boy was yellow, not red and white.

Thanks Raystractors & Jim for your responses. I believe my tractor came in the optional red color when it was ordered. While cleaning her up (years of dirt and grease) I find a bright red color in the more hidden spots. The more exposed parts have faded over time, but I cannot explain this other red color.

Here are a few pictures. To me it looks as if the IH2150 paint color is much darker than on the brake hub. I have been known to be wrong..... Thanks.

I would bet that the color difference in your photos is due to the oil pan being protected from UV and coated with oil, while the hood, etc. are exposed to the sun.

If you are trying to determine the original shade by looking at the tractor, I suggest looking on places like the bottom of the gas tank where it has been reasonably protected.

Just a comment, we had NAPA mix us up their version of IH50. It was a good bit darker than all the 2150 I see today, and that is what we wanted. Anyone who has seen and can recall my son's Cub might remember that it is a few shades darker than typical Cubs. Now, that may have been what IH50 was supposed to look like, or may be NAPA's take on it. A similar test at Sherwin Williams yielded something that looked like red oxide primer (their version of IH50?). When I was growing up, the IH red that I remember was more like what we ended up with at NAPA, darker than today's 2150.

If it matters to you, I suggest you ask them to mix you a sample before buying the whole gallon.
