49 Cub spark issue

Postby ctltmp » Tue Aug 09, 2016 6:24 pm

Glad I have you guys! Well I've no experience with mags so here goes. I have spark at the points. Doesn't look good yellow not hot blue, but no spark to any of the wires. Where should I start looking first for issues.

Just wanted to fire it off to get oil moving through the engine with all new bearings and rings. Once again old 49 has not cooperated!

Thanks in advance!

Yellow spark at points, typical condenser failure.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Like I say I have little to no experience with mags.
So if I hook up a plug and ground it I should have spark or hook and plug up to the center cap wire I should have spark? Which is correct?

I looked back at your previous posts but could not determine if your mag is running with or without an external coil so just to make sure we're on the same page, which is it? If you are using the mag with NO external coil, then make sure the spark has somewhere to go to ground when you turn the engine, otherwise you might fry the coil without knowing it. Stan

Stan, mag does not have an external coil. I pulled the coil cover off and the coil shows no sign of a melt down at all. Pretty much looks new.

First let me say I'm not a mag expert, not even a novice BUT talking to some forum members who are TRULY EXPERTS, they say if the charge from the mag coil does not have the CORRECT path to ground, i.e. a wire from the cap to ground or connected to a plug, then the coil will look for a path, that's when it might short internally. Someone will probably chime in to explain this better but just my 2 cents worth. Since a new mag coil is around $100, it's not worth the gamble. Good luck with yours. Stan

I read some earlier posts and their was someone who rebuilt mags for around 150. I'll have to figure something out.

Like I said in an earlier post, I cut a 52 cub out with trees all grown up around it and it was 10 times easier than this one (garage and barn kept). It's fought me every step of the way. Might be the ghost of Nimrod just won't turn it loose.......

Yeah, I know the feeling. Don McCombs rebuilt one for me at DSCF last February and let me watch and help a little bit so I at least got to see what's inside that makes it work. A special puller is needed to disassemble it so save yourself the trouble and keep from damaging yours. There's others that do this also, I mentioned Don because of past contact with him, Nice Guy to deal with. Stan

Don's Forum name is the same: Don McCombs. Rick Spivey is the other one who does mag rebuilds.

I'd like to be able to claim credit, but it was Rick Spivey who rebuilt Stan's mag at DSCF. I just sat there and watched. :D

OOPS,CRIS has struck again!!! Sorry Don and Rick! I plead a long day, I drove 6 hours to spend a few hours at DSCF, then drove home that night. I wish the driving time passed as quickly as the time at Mr E's that day. Would I do it again? YOU BETCHA!! The time spent at Cubfests is the best time I get to spend with my Cubs and the forum members. Can't wait until February!! Stan

Here's a picture of the mag since someone had a question of what it was.
