Pasture Find
Hello- I recently bought my slice of earth and upon exploring all that was left behind by the previous owner I came across a patch of weeds, saplings, and after some research a 1960 Cub in the pasture. My 9 year old and I decided that we would drag it into the shop and see if we can make a project out of it. I am guessing it has been sitting 2-3 years but it appears to have been used, parked and then forgotten. I believe the previous owner was in his late 80's when he parked it an then passed onto the farm in the sky and that is why it was just left. The belts on the mower appear to be good, the rear tires are almost new, and I can hear some what I hope is fuel and not water in the tank. My first of what will be many over the coming weeks/months will be how in the heck do I get it out of the field? Before I try to get it in neutral, raise the mower deck and hook onto it with my truck is there anything I should be cautious of or something that I don't want to do? Once I get it out of the weather and can start to make a mess of things I will start to see where it is at mechanically. Any help or advice will be more than welcome.

Re: Pasture Find
Welcome to the forum. These are pretty robust little tractors and you probably can't hurt it dragging it out of the field. Slow and easy will be the name of the game with a spotter sitting on the tractor to apply the brakes and steer. If the back wheels aren't turning, the brakes could be rusted to the drums or it might be stuck in a gear. The top transmission cover can be easily removed to see if the shifter forks are both in the neutral position. I would suggest dragging it just far enough to be on level ground, then rocking it by hand to ensure that nothing is binding. If it is rolling freely, off to the shop with you!

Re: Pasture Find
DO NOT under any circumstances pull the Cub by attaching to the front axle. This will unduly stress the the engine mounting "ears" which are a part of the "frame" of the tractor. Should they break or crack, you may be looking at another engine block. Best to attach to the drawbar when pulling Cubs either forward or backward. Sounds like you have a nice project ahead.

Re: Pasture Find
I would add that whenever I am pulling something with unknown brakes, if possible, I have the person steering put it into first gear and keep the clutch applied. That way if the brakes don't work (and you won't really know until you are on the worst hill) you can use the clutch and engine as a brake.

Re: Pasture Find
Bill E. Bob is absolutely correct. NEVER hook to the front axle. If you can't hook to the drawbar or other substantial mounting point on the rear then either load it on a trailer or pull it backwards.

Re: Pasture Find
May as well dump that suspect gas and put in some fresh stuff. Same with the oil.
Don't try to crank it over until you have primed the oil pump. Search this site for instructions on this.

Hard for me to post from my phone, but if this works, this is a link to a post tbat might help you get started:
http://www.farmallcub.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=48032
There ARE some very important first steps to take with a "new" tractor, BEFORE you try to start it!
I second the statement of NOT pulling the tractor be the front axle. You can still pull it forward, but attach the tow rope at the drawbar, assuming it has one mounted.
Good luck, and continue to ask questions!

Re: Pasture Find
Thanks for all of the quick info. Fortunately the front end is not as easily accessible as the draw bar so I will pull it backwards and should know pretty quick if anything is locked up. Once I get it into the garage all fluids are coming out of it as I have already seen a few spider webs inside one of the hoses. As I make progress I will be back with many many more questions. THANKS EVERYONE!

Well, well. Another Missouri Cubber! Welcome to the forum. Glad you found us and more importantly, found the '60 Cub.
While you're reading up on your Cub, you might as well download the Owner's Manual via the "PDF Manual" link across the top of the screen. You might also want to read through this thread:

Want to also mention an annual CubFest (a gathering of Cub owners) that goes on in California, MO, each May and the Cub-A-Rama to be held this September down in Fredericktown, MO. Reference here:

I'm west of you near KC. Again, welcome to the forum!

Re: Pasture Find
Welcome to the FORUM and the best source of info about CUBS and IH as well. The posts above have you pretty well covered, just try to digest all the info about lubrication (prime the oil pump before trying to turn the engine) and the other maintenance guides in the Owners Manual and you should be OK. Great opportunity to build some memories with your son. We would love to see some pictures of the find. Here's one that was abandoned for 10 to 15 years, I cut the trees and bushes down to get it out to load it:
EDIT: This is the support that attaches to the implement mounting pad to be able to support the mower without the hydraulics in use: PM if you want the dimensions.
It's a work in progress. Someone has said that if it can cast a shadow it can be restored. StanEDIT: This is the support that attaches to the implement mounting pad to be able to support the mower without the hydraulics in use: PM if you want the dimensions.

Re: Pasture Find
Hi,
Here is a picture of where the hole is for priming the oil pump. Just remove the oil filter top, and it is easy to see, use a light if you need to.
I fill a clean oil can with motor oil, and pump it into the hole, you might need more than one filling of the oil can to fill the passages in the engine.

Re: Pasture Find
Just one thing I'd add, watch out for bees.
Bees love to nest in the torque tube of unused tractors.
I have an A that was someones yard ornament sitting unused for several years. I put fresh gas in, swapped out to a clean carb, hand cranked it and it fired right up.
With a little TLC I think yours will run too.
Good luck with it.
Mike.
