Another Road Trip Thursday

Postby 1541 » Thu Aug 18, 2016 8:04 pm

I think this is starting to become a habit. Back in July Dennis had a listing from a gentleman from Zanesville that had his father's Cub and various attachments for sale in the Vine. The Cub had been his father's pride and joy which he had restored 25 years ago. His father passed away last year and his mother wanted the tractor to go to a good home and not be parted out. Darrell and I went to look at the tractor in July and everything was as described. We made an offer and it was accepted on a handshake and we asked if we could come back in August after everything settled down from the Cub Tug to pick it up. Tonight, Darrell, Mark and I rode over to pick up the tractor and implements.

Anyway it is a straight honest 1949 Cub with a 42" mower. It came with a complete 193 plow including all of the mounting bolts and a set of cultivators. The cultivators had been in the fence row for several years and will take a little work to get them freed up again.

Doug, You may have to turn one of your high tunnels into a tractor barn. Nice looking Cub.

Tried that, Bob. Gets so hot in them, in the summer, it cooks seals, and cub operators!

Nice Cub! Thanks for sharing the story and pictures.

Planning on a refurb or just clean up and use?

The plan is to clean it up and put it to work and see what we have.

I had some time to work on the new Cub today. It was a no go when I attempted to start it the other night. Fuel was flowing good through the carb. However, upon further inspection I wasn't getting any spark. A quick look at the points and it became obvious that they were the issue. I swapped in fresh points but I was outside and it was getting dark so I hurried to get everything buttoned back up. I now had spark but it wouldn't fire. I did get two pops when I let off of the starter. That sounded like timing. It was too dark to see and time to go in the house by then.

Today after breakfast I checked the rotor and pinion. Yep, in my hurry in the dark I didn't have them installed correctly. I pulled the rotor and cranked the engine back to #1 and got everything lined up. Two pulls on the crank and the Cub was up and running as if I had just parked it for lunch.

Oil pressure was pegged all the way to the right and it was showing a charge. A quick grease job and it was off for a mowing test. The tractor has the quietest cub transmission I have ever heard. All of the gears are smooth and the governor is responsive. No smoke from the exhaust.

It does a fine job of mowing. However, the 42" mower doesn't have an overrunning clutch. It wants to keep driving the tractor forward when the clutch is depressed until the blades spin down.

Doug,

Another Thursday has passed with no report of a road trip. Are you slacking off?

Bill, I am afraid if Bonnie sees Darrell and I leave with the trailer again on a Thursday that the locks would be changed by the time we return.
