Woods 42 spindle swap?

Postby Dale Finch » Fri Aug 19, 2016 7:52 am

I have several Woods 42 mowers, and noticed one has a spindle with the classic spoke cracks in the sheave. I do have a spare spindle (both have the overrunning clutch) and the sheave appears to be in good shape. The only problem is that the clutch on the spare is VERY stiff, as in it takes a hammer to get it to go backwards. I greased the spindle and oiled the clutch, but not sure if I can get it working correctly.

So, my questions are, how hard is it to swap out JUST the sheave? (I have the broken spindle off the mower) If I go ahead and install the "new" stiff spindle, do you think I will be able to free up the clutch mechanism? Advice? Thanks!

OK, I know there are a lot of Woods 42 guys out there!!! I need to get this machine back out in the fields mowing! Can't someone answer my 2 questions:
1 How hard is it to swap out just the sheave on a Woods 42 spindle with the overunning clutch?
2 Can an overunning clutch that locks, but doesn't go backwards, be "loosened" up?

Thanks...the grass is growing!!!
