Puller needed for fan drive pulley- Minnesota

Postby Burnt Cub » Sun Sep 04, 2016 9:02 pm

Guys-

I am a newly registered member but long time viewer of the forum. My Dad is restoring a '48 and we need to put in a new front seal, among other things. I am getting ready to build a puller but thought I would ask if anyone in the central Minnesota area would have one we could use?

Thank you.

Welcome to the site. I'm a little too far away to loan you tools, but wanted to welcome you to the site.
There will be more members to follow up, so maybe there is someone close by that could loan you a puller. If you go to the how to section there will be directions on how to make this tool.

Pull the pulley, before ordering the seal. You may need a speedy sleeve, to cover the worn seal surface on the pulley. I did one that had a groove worn in it, 1/8 inch deep! TM has the seal/sleeve kit, f you find you need it. Puller is easy to make, if you have access to a plasma cutter. I brought a hunk of steel, and a pulley to the local high school, and explained what I needed. They cut it out, for me.

Hi and good luck on your 48! I've seen some different people use a big bearing splitter and a 3 jaw puller. Sometimes it works ok, sometimes not. Some are harder than others to pull.

That's a great idea taking the metal to a high school or local vocational school! I would have never thought of it! I'm sure they would be happy to have a simple project like that. Great idea.

looks like we're nearly neighbors. Unfortunately, I don't have a puller plate. I have a bearing splitter I intend to use when I need to pull one, but haven't tried it yet. I don't really like the fit and afraid it may break the pulley. Although willing to try on my tractor, I wouldn't hand it to somebody else and say "use this".
