New headlights needed
I am trying to get my headlights working on my 1959 Cub Loboy. I had some old GE 4511 bulbs that I bought years ago for another tractor, but they don't fit in the old housings on this Cub. What do I need to get to make my headlights work again?

Re: New headlights needed
The '59 seal beam headlight. I was not able to find an LED direct replacement for 6 v sealed beam housing. The sealed beam as still available.
You could buy a reflector with the "ba15s" socket and retrofit the LEDs in the post mentioned above.
There are some 12 v LED options for sealed beam. http://www.ebay.com/itm/171757980044 I purchased these but have not installed them in my 65 low boy (converted 12 v) that has I think the same rounded (not tear drop not pancake) 2 wire lights. Cannot say how well they fit or how bright until I get to that project.

Ok, I looked through that post and at the bulbs on eBay and it looked like it was just a bulb that fits in an old fashion car taillight socket? I just have the old light housings on my Cub that don't have a light socket in them. The wires just went under the screws on the old bulbs. So, I am looking for a solution with either a bulb that fits in the old housing or a new housing/bulb combination that I can plug right in and go back to work.

Re: New headlights needed
sounds like you have the flatter "pancake" lights, they do repro the bulb but are pricey, TM has them, you can use the 4511 if you do not want original

I don't understand your original post, " I had some old GE 4511 bulbs that I bought years ago for another tractor, but they don't fit in the old housings on this Cub " ! Which shells does your tractor have ? On my '57 I'm using the #4511 , they have the "flat back" shell , I just measured the earlier "tear drop" style , on my '48 , it appears to have a 4 1/2" cavity for the bulb to sit in, and the #4511 has the outside diameter of 4 1/2 " , am I missing something ? ( you might have to come up with some sort of a gasket )

I tried putting the old rubber off the old bulb around the new 4511, but the clamp wouldn't fit and the contacts on back the bulb were too close to the steel housing for comfort. It looked like the bulbs would take an awful beating if not padded somehow. Since this is just one of our "working" tractors here on the farm I was hoping for an easy and cheap plug and play solution.

I put a rubber grommet in the hole on the housing which holds the sealed beam in place

Did you fashion any form of rubber seal to pad the perimeter of the bulb against the steel clamp and housing? I do have the flat back headlight housings with about a one inch diameter hole in the back that the bulb used to stick through. And putting a rubber grommet here to hold the 4511 bulb forward to protect the wire contacts sounds like a good idea. Thanks for that one. Now, if I just can find an idea for a rubber seal I will be in business!

Re: New headlights needed
4511 bulbs should fit a '59 light housing. Your housing description sounds like the earlier pancake style rather than the correct one for '59

Maybe my International Cub Lo-Boy is not a 1959 year then. It has the rounded red colored tank and white grill with horizontal bars an inch or so apart. Also has a Fast-Hitch on it. But all three lights on it look original to the tractor and I took the old bulbs out of it that had the socket-like protrusion sticking through the back hole in the light housing. One of the bulbs in it was the newer 4511 bulbs with one of the original rubber seals around it like was on the old metal back bulbs. But it didn't fit very well.

Yes that is what I have. All three of them are identical to the picture you posted. I finished trimming the original rubber gaskets like instructed in a previous post, and mounted the three lights back into the housings on the tractor. They don't mount real securely doing them this way as the rim around the outside of the bulbs is thicker than the original metal rimmed bulbs. It looks like on a bad bump on a hard day of mowing they may become dislodged from the light fixture and fall out. But I have them all in there and they work just fine. I just hope I don't loose them. I was afraid of tightening down the screw too much and cracking the bulbs, but they are pretty tight anyway. I think I might be on the lookout for something more modern that will work on this Cub, since we do a lot of mowing after dark when we have the lights on to stay out of the heat of day. Maybe some of those LED bulbs mounted in a new socket might be the trick.

This is the easiest, but obviously not the cheapest, solution for your lights.
