Help me before i hall it to the scrap yard

Postby tomcat » Mon Sep 12, 2016 8:00 pm

Well i am back to working on my cubs and about ready to quit again. I have a cub that won't run. i took the carb apart clean it up real good took the fuel strainer off put new screen and gasket in it put it all back together started right up run about a minute then died and started right back another min. Well after awhile and a few more times and some words i should not be using took the carb off my other cub same thing put the first carb on the tractor that runs started right up and ran good anyway the one cub will run with either carb the other cub won't. Now i am give out from all this typing. LOL Much more of this and it is going to the scrap yard. Not really but sounds good. please tell me what to do next. :help:

Take out the main jet, open the shut off and make sure you have a good solid stream of gas for a minute. Sounds like there is still a fuel obstruction between the tank and carb.
Do you have an inline filter on the "bad" Cub?

Bob has you covered. Fuel starvation problem upstream from the carb. Both carbs work on the running Cub, the carb is not the problem. The fuel line (inline fuel filter), sediment bowl, or gas tank is/are the source of the problem.

Haul it to my place. I got apretty new snow blower that was doing the same thing. Gas line was plugged in fuel tank and the mechanics could'nt figure out why it would run for a while ,then quit, and then start up and run for a few seconds or minute, depending on how long it sat.

Thats where a Pony Tank comes in handy. I had a ant (insect) in the inlet of the fuel settlement bowl It would shut off fuel part of the time. I put another bowl on it. I cleaned the old one and found the bug.

Don't forget to check the vents in the gas tank cap.

Sounds like there's something in the gas tank (particles/sediment) that is swirling around blocking full fuel flow. If carb is good, fuel line is clear and sediment bowl clean, the blockage has to be further upstream in your tank.

Has the tank ever been emptied and cleaned?

Let us know, Tomcat. Hope everything else is going well for you.

If you tried the pony tank (pretty simple to make one up) it certainly would tell the tale if there is some obstruction. I had a bug in a massey harris years ago causing blockage. Gave a fit until I found and removed him. All good thoughts to try from these guys.

I just had a similar issue where gas would flow to the carb, but it wasn't enough to keep the enging running. Pulled the fuel line and blew it out and had a large amount of debris came out with the air. Ran like a top there after. So, I think the fuel flow; whether the restriction is in the tank, sediment bowl, or line; is the problem.

Did not have time to mess with it today but i am going to put my pony tank on it like Johnny said. I wish i would have thought of that. Most of the time my thinker don't think to good.

Sounds like crap in the tank plugging up the screen in the fuel bowl. Pretty common, and you even said you saw rust in the tank. That's your problem. A little rust or grass clippings, pine needles, leaves, anything like that, will cause exactly what you're describing. The debris stays suspended until fuel starts to go out of the tank, then it all collects at the outlet and plugs it up. Shut the engine off , fuel flow stops, and it goes back into suspension. Have seen it in MANY tractors.
