Good gas flow, engine starts and has short run time. Fouled up carburetor.

Cheap try. Bottle of fuel line/carburetor cleaner from auto parts store. Mix a bit stronger than the recommendation on the side of the container. Start engine, let run until it dies. Wait several minutes, try again. If/when the engine will run for a minute or so, move the throttle to change the engine rpms.
I have an excuse. CRS.

It may not solve your problem but help diagnose it- have you tried pulling the choke out when it starts to die and see what happens ? This usually helps determine fuel starvation problem or not.

Just curious too, are you feeding the carb from the pony tank with the same line, filter, etc. as the regular tank?

Have you checked any of the electrical componets. My dad was hay teddering back in the spring and at times the tractor would die,but it would crank without hesitation until the next day I came in from work and he said it died and wouldn't start. Checked the fuel system and seemed okay, started on electrical and found coil wire not properly secured, hasn't skipped a beat since. Also if you haven't already, check points for proper gap,If the distributer is worn it can be a bit tricky.Randy

I' tend to think with Randy57. I have had a couple of bad condensers that bout drove me nuts. loose distributor cap? loose coil wire? I think you have eliminated the fuel issue.

If magneto, check that kill wire isn't grounding due to vibration when running. If distributor with battery ignition, check that coil wire is secure and not loose. Could be electrical, and if so, sounds like something grounding out when it should not, related to engine vibration.

I like and agree with gitractorman's technical term. Sounds like "CRAP" in the tank. :)

Since you've eliminated fuel as the culprit, next thing to check is electrical.

Weak spark, intermittent spark, timing way off... All these could be your problem.

My two cents,I think Randy has it pegged bad condenser,It runs shot while gets warm and breaks down and quits then cools down a little and starts, runs a little and quits. Change condenser not an expensive try.

Have you tried to run it with the air cleaner disconnected? Could it be starving for air?
