How much weight can the Fast-Hitch/TC lift?

Postby clm2112 » Wed Sep 21, 2016 5:10 am

Probably an odd question, but here is the scenario:

I need to lift a Merc 350 engine out of the hull of a stern-drive boat. Unfortunately, it is buried down in the hull beyond the reach of a regular engine hoist. I got the engine down to about 200 lbs. (stripped the engine down to a long block.) I can make an "L" shaped steel tube hook to serve as the lifting point off the Fast-Hitch, but was concerned about over-loading the Fast Hitch & Touch Control on the Cub.

Hence the question, how much weight can the Fast Hitch & Touch Control lift? Anyone succeed in breaking one while lifting an implement?

I have enough weight that I can attach to the Cub's front axle to balance out the weight of the motor hanging from the hook off the back, so I am not worried about lifting the front wheels off the ground.

The alternative is constructing a gantry or A-Frame big enough to straddle the hull.

The short answer is: It depends. It depends on how long of a boom you intend to have hanging off the fast hitch. The longer it is, the less it will lift. I have neither a fast hitch nor touch control, so I can't advise as to their ultimate limits.

That said, you may be better off using a chain hoist or come-along hanging from a sturdy tree limb or a reinforced rafter in a building. It's also possible that your friendly local tow truck driver or construction worker would pull it out for a case of beer or two.

There's no doubt it will pick it up but you got to factor in the leverage it's going to put in places that don't usually get it.
God is good, all the time!

Thanks. Yup, that made the decision for me. The Cub is probably not going to be able to hack lifting the engine. It will be about the same distance as the furthest point on that boom you made (which is pretty neat by the way.)

Going to plan "B"... constructing a stationary A-frame to do the actual lifting of the engine out of the hull. Then use the Cub to pull the boat & trailer out from under it, once the engine has been lifted high enough to clear the transom.

Hi,
The 1955 Cub owner's manual didn't have much info about weight limits for the Fast Hitch.
Here is info from the 1965 Cub owner's manual about loading the Fast Hitch. It's on the right side of the page at A, B, and C. The table below that is for a LoBoy.
I thought I'd put it on here, if anyone wanted to see it. :)
