A bit of smoke?

Postby ScottyG » Mon Sep 12, 2005 2:37 pm

When I first started tinkering around with Henry over a year ago and ran a compression check, all cylinders were on average about 110 psi; pretty good.

Lately, if I'm running at idle, I get a bit of oil burn up the stack with puffs of blue smoke. At no other time do I notice this. Is this normal or am I looking at a ring job in my future?

Thanks.

Scotty:

Ellie does similar stuff at times. Last time I checked the compression it was high 70's to low 80's -- all within 10lbs though.. and she ran pretty good.

After the head gasket blew and as I cleaned the head of the gunk and crud, put her back together she seems to have better compression...  still haven't redone the compression test - she is too busy workin for that at the moment though.

She is runnin like a champ, but at idle I get a little puff of blue every now and then..

Personally, and from my limited experience perspective.. it is probably ok, but you like I may have a ring job down the road, but it will probably be awhile..

I hope :D my fingers are crossed

Engines in good condition draw a vacuum of between 18 to 20 inches of mercury at idle. As the engine speed increases the vacuum decreases.

The Cub has a valve in block engine. The valve guides/stems do not have seals. A bit of wear on the valve guides and stems will permit small amounts of oil to be drawn into the combustion chamber at idle (high vacuum).

A little smoke at idle, let’s call it normal. If the engine is in otherwise good condition - just live with it for the next 15 or 20 years until the next major overhaul.

Thanks guys. He's running like a champ at the moment. Just wanted to get an idea for projects down the road.

Scotty:

Am I sensing a hidden NEED for a Cub Project :!:  8) :?:

If so, then drastic measures may need to be taken :!:

I believe that you just may be suffering from the old Lack-of-Another Cub-itis.

There is only one cure, and that is finding another Cub :!:     That should provide you for another downtheroad project a little quicker.....

ASren't you working on a crawler at school Scotty? If I remember that right he will be busy for quite a while. Probably cutting and blowing corn keeping him busy this season. Some of his posts make me feel he lives on a working farm. Or is that works on a living farm?

Bill, It's ScottyD that's working on the crawler at school. Not ScottyG.

Yes, the G in ScottyG stands for "G"imme another cub! Perhaps you're all onto somthing? The Cub runs so well now, I'm looking for things to tinker with. Maybe time to replace the front seal while I wait a while for more wear out of my rings

Scotty.

Suggest swapping the front tires. You have to leave the rims on the original side, no cheating.

When you get that done remove the rear tires and tubes. Clean up and paint the inside of the rims.
