How I dug potatoes this year

Postby Our Pass Thyme » Sun Oct 02, 2016 5:11 pm

Here is how I set up my cultivator bars to dig potatoes this year. I reversed the bars to allow my hillers to be as close as possible and to clear away dirt and potatoes behind the tires. At the right speed, most of the potatoes would be on the surface. The two deer tongue blades were able to be placed next to each other by opposing the clamps and worked very well as a shovel. From the seat, you could just see them and it was very easy to stay centered on the hills. My video camera was hiding somewhere so I was unable to make a production of the working set up in action.

I'm building a potato digger this winter that I'm placing the tool bars the same I'm thinking I will use a flat bar to to slide under the taters and dump them on a grate that vibration is powered from the PTO. I will post pictures if it is successful.

I've been using a middlebuster to harvest taters. Works well. If you could hook up a small middle buster blade to a layoff bar or on back cultivator bars that will work too.

I have been looking for a middlebuster with toolbar but have not been able to locate one around here. I have been tempted to go aftermarket, but it was time to dig potatoes and I had to use what I had, or hoe by hand - 1500 feet of potatoes. -Tom

I acquired a mule pull middlebuster someone had converted to a fast hitch. Came as part of a package deal. I figgered it was junk. Tried it out and it worked fine. And to think I almost gave it away. Lol

I be more interested in knowing where I can get my hands on a real cub middlebuster with the tool bar so I don't have to post these embarrassing pictures of my crazy setups. :oops: -Tom {But feel free to send me a pm of the picture by all means! :hattip: }

I've got a middle buster as well that looks like someone made (I've not found pictures of it online yet). It sets back quite a ways from the draw bar, but it would serve the purpose. I'll take some pics tonight and post them for those that may want another idea for making their own.
