Polarize Generator with 6V Positive Ground

Hello Everyone,
Just to confirm, if we have a positive ground system, do we run a jumper from the negative pole on the battery to the A terminal on the generator or to the positive pole on the battery?
Also, is it critical that we don't turn on the ignition switch prior to polarizing?
