Cub Dies

Postby LARRY BALL » Mon Oct 17, 2016 12:09 am

I just picked up a Cub this morning. When I disconnect the Battery Cable the tractor immediately dies.
On the dash there is a push-pull switch. What is it's purpose? I have no previous owner information.

The push pull is the ignition switch, if alternator, it's not charging. If generator, it may need polarized. The amp meter should indicate charging when running.

Unless you have a magneto, the engine will die when the battery is disconnected, since now there is no voltage on the primary of the ignition coil to create a spark. Also, it's not a good idea to disconnect the battery on a generator or alternator since these are designed to deliver current. Without a battery load, the voltages can go quite high and do damage by arcing across the windings of the generator or alternator.

If you go to the left side of the page near the top and click the PDF manuals link you can download owner, service, and parts manuals. As has been mentioned, disconnecting the battery on a running engine is NOT a good idea.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

From my understanding, the ignition runs off the battery and the generator then recharges the battery. The generator doesn't power the ignition coil directly, so the battery must be hooked up to power the ignition.
