So I brought my cub home and all I could think about was getting it started.
I've got it running so 1st thing was add new oil and filter.
Then I replaced 2 tires, 1front, 1 rear. Added a hot battery and thought I was off.
I realized my battery was not charging, so started to inspect everything.
To my amazement I found the voltage regulator in very bad shape.
After reading Clems post viewtopic.php?f=1&t=91765
I decided to check everything. Drained the tranny. Yep, Water and other scum but very little oil.
Checked the final on the left side and nothing came out. poked a pinky in there and nothing ,dry.
Now I know why it was whining on that test run. Hope I didn't ruin anything .
Tomorrow I have to remove an implement bar and do the right side.
I drained the hydraulic oil and it looked good.
Will check the steering gear box tomorrow.
If anyone has any suggestions , I'm all ears.
On a good note. My new gas cap arrived today.

Looks like you're well on your way to having a nice working Cub. What's the condition of the inside of the gas tank? If it is at all rusty, some attention there will save you a lot of headaches going forward. Not sure how cold it gets in Louisiana during the winter, but a check of your coolant would be a good idea. If it's not nice and radioactive green, you'll want to drain/flush/refill.

Re: Battery not charging / reason why
I would convert the tractor to a 12 volt single wire alternator. Not spending $75- on a quality regulator and then probably having to rebuild the generator.
The conversion to a single wire alternator will cost a bit more than a quality regulator. But will be much less expensive in the long run.

The Owner's Manual has a complete section on lubrication. If you don't already have that, it's available for free download from the "PDF Manuals" link located across the top of the page.
Looks like you're well on your way. Take your time and keep a log book of the date and description of service performed. It'll be a good reference in the months/years to come of what you did and when.

Great idea. Should go into the tip off the week.Stanton wrote:Take your time and keep a log book of the date and description of service performed. It'll be a good reference in the months/years to come of what you did and when.
Memory fades. I didn't realize how time flies until I researched this site and found out that 11 years had passed since I installed a NOS engine block in my standard Cub.

I was hoping to keep everything as original as was possible
I took a regulator off my 70s model parts tractor
I'm working on a 65
