cub mower went bad

Postby kenscub » Fri Nov 04, 2016 12:00 pm

Took cub out to pasture for second run. Tried out the mowere and after about 5 minutes the blades quit turning. The PTO , Idler pulleys and the belt are turning. The pulley on the mower is turning but no blades. Is there a shear pin on the pulley shaft of possible some splines have sheared?? Any help appreciated ??

The only identification left on the mower is an IH logo about 2" square. and an ID tag riveted next ot logo. Number on Id tag is C2U 1111. 42" blade. Me thinks me will need a diagram but I cant find one on this site.

There is a 1/4" square key holding the pulley to the spindle.

You will have to take the pulley off to find out what happened.

There is a bolt with grease zerk holding the pulley to the spindle. The bolt comes loose causing parts to wobble/wear. I had to replace the spindle and pulley on an IH mower deck this past winter. The pulley was a sloppy fit on the spindle. Spindle key way worn.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Hi,
Here is the C-2 mower owner's manual, if you haven't seen one. It is from 1967, it says.
It's not a parts book though. :)

Here's something I found for a Cub C2 mower on Messicks website: http://www.messicks.com/wo/2910

Thanks for the help, guys. Following Eugene's instructions I took the pulley off and found sseveraal hiccups. The key was sheared. The four plunger pins in the ratchet clutch were rested and stuck. Lots of old hard grease. One Zerk was missing. And about .010 to .015 vertical play in the shaft.

Major cleanup. Got he plungers to working, replaced the key and added a thick shim to make up for the vertical play+. Relpaced the zerk. reassembled th whole thing and greased it and is now working correctly. Thanks again. The refrences to the diagrams are now in my Farmall Cyb file. Hope I don't forget how to get to the file. ken
