Stencil challenge

Postby Dusty B » Mon Nov 07, 2016 9:01 pm

OK - brought my IH 100 manure spreader home from N WI - first thing I noticed was the stenciled instruction - NOT stick ons but paint on paint! Now, my question is, where can I find an original stencil to duplicate these if I wind up restoring the spreader?? Does the one stencil indicate this just might be one of the first 100 spreaders manufactured?? W/try to post pics of the actual lettering.

Dusty, The "100" in the circle just refers to the model. I've never seen any kind of SN on the 100's, 200's or 200-H's that I've seen.

Yes, I realize that - guess I didn't phrase that correctly. I'm guessing that it was one of the early ones built by the reference to "steel wheels". Can't say I've seen or heard reference to a 100 model with steel wheels, but obviously they were available!

Dusty,

I'm thinking that the 100 was available as a horse drawn model, thus the steel wheels (Amish version, maybe).

I have manuals for the 100 dated 1941 and 1950. Pictures show rubber tires in both, with no part #. My 100-H manual is dated 1946 and also shows rubber tires. My guess would be that the buyer could specify which he wanted (steel or rubber) and that war time production was all steel due to the rubber shortage. The 100-H had a single front wheel with the levers on the sides of the spreader so the operator could sit in the middle. I think Rudi has one that had the front wheel removed and was converted to tractor pulled.

Like (Cub Hut), I bought a sheet of basic stencils at Hobby Lobby to do my 193 plow. Never got around to it, but they were the closest match I could find.

Remember, if you're going to use a stencil, don't overload your paint brush unless you want it to leak under the stencil. Very little paint is needed when stenciling. :coffee:

Someone who does vinyl signs can cut you a stencil pretty easily.

Dusty B,
I recently got myself a 200H manure spreader. None of the original letting survives, so I am very interested in your stenciling. I have looked at decal kits online (From Maple Hunter and others...) and none contain this stenciling. I was wondering if you could post some pictures of your manure showing a wider angle, so I could get the placement of the stenciling? Also, how tall are the letters?

I've had decent luck making stencils by printing them out on paper and then cutting out the letters with an x-acto knife. It's tedious, but works well. Also, I use spray paint with stencils. Not to heavy though, otherwise it will run.

Thanks in advance! I look forward to following this project!
