Carry All plan enlargement

Postby Sailor » Sun Nov 27, 2016 7:53 am

I've been looking over the plans for building a carry-all. Is it possible to extend the platform without a total re-engineering of the plans? If so, how long can I make the platform?

Do you mean wider, as in projecting out from the sides of the tractor? Or longer as in extending farther behind the tractor?
Even minor additions to the length behind the tractor will reduce the weight that can be lifted if the load is on the back edge of the platform. And such extensions will increase the tendency of the front wheels to lift when going uphill with the platform loaded.
Longer arms to the rear also increase the stress on the joint where the platform frame goes from vertical to horizontal up at the tractor. Reinforcement or heavier material may be required. Heavier platforms reduce the amount of weight that the platform can haul because the tractor has limitations on the total weight.
Sorry to sound so discouraging.

I had a thought of extending the length to accommodate a chair. All the things you mentioned were in my mind and that is why I posed the question.

No need for the apologies, I appreciate the informed answer... I'll just shift my thinking towards a small trailer.

Thanks again for the response.

I made a bench seat that snaps on/over the side rails of my 2 wheeled trailer.

This still leaves cargo space in the trailer and under the seat.
I have an excuse. CRS.

One option is rather than build the carry all for the chair, build the chair for the carry all.

I've seen setups where the seat hangs out over the back of the carry all and the carry all is basically just a footrest. This arrangement does present the same cantilevering issues described above, but if you're not carrying around a couple of NFL offensive linemen...

You could also reverse things and put the seat over the front of the carry all so the passenger(s) are facing backwards. This puts the weight in closer to the tractor. Kind of like the rear seat on a golf cart.

I don't know what a fast hitch flail mower weighs, gotta be around 300lbs, and it sticks way out there. Makes the front wheels on my Cub a little light that's for sure. So I figure if you keep your passenger weight down around 200lbs

I had hoped to have something put together in time for our local Xmas parade this Saturday, but that didn't happen. :(

So now I've got time to consider both options. Many thanks Guys, for the inputs.
