black gooey stuff

Postby john2189 » Wed Dec 07, 2016 8:53 am

is coming out of the underslung muffler of my 72. Is my motor worn out or valves need reseated, something else? It does use about 1/2 qt of oil in about 6 hrs of running time at full throttle mowing,I do not notice any blue smoke. it has some small leaks too.. Ive had it for 11 years and I dont notice any power loss. if it needs rebuilt now is the time during winter to do it. any other things it could be?

Condensation in the exhaust system dissolving the built up carbon. If it dries, it's carbon. If not, it's oil.

1/2 a quart in 6 hours isn't good. How bad are the leaks?

Not that bad,but if the rings were worn out, wouldnt it burn the oil instead of passing thro the exhaust? Could it be worn valve guides?

Yes, if the rings/cylinders were worn bad enough it would burn it and you would have spark plugs fouling and smoke out the exhaust. It very well could be valve guides. Have you pulled any plugs and inspected them? Are you seeing any white smoke? Oil smoke can also be white, trust me, my Sonoma looks like a cloud just left the exhaust if I drive it and it sits for 8 hours+, it needs valve seals.

No I havnt checked plugs yet. There is no noticeable smoking. I will remove the dipstick to see if there is any blowby next time i get a chance. It still runs really good and no loss of power.

Okay, check your plugs too. That will give you some direction to go if the plugs are clean. You can tell a lot by the color or carbon build up on plugs if they been in a while. If you search on Bing "how to read a spark plug" all kinds of charts will come up as to how to read what's on them.

Cubs don't have overhead valves, so oil leakage by the valve guides isn't an issue. They don't have valve seals, like OHV engines do.

If oil isn't getting past the valve guides (which it would be hard to do without overhead valves) it has to be going by the piston/rings and there will be evidence on the spark plugs. I know they don't have valve seals, just got done rebuilding one. I made that reference to my truck, I know it needs valve seals in it.

Yup, and consuming 1/2 quart in 6 hours, it should be smoking like a fiend if that is the problem.

Odds are better that you have a bad leak somewhere, front or rear seal would be my first suspicions.

oil leaks is about the size of a quarter when it sits for a week, so maybe it smokes more than I think it does
