Keep in mind that where the wire attaches isn't electrically the starter. You still have to get through two connection points in the switch. That switch itself could very easily be the, or part of the, problem. When you pull the starting lever you push the button down and force a wedge between the underside of the bolt the wire from the battery is connected to and the nub coming out of the starter, completing the electrical connection. It is very common for the contact points on the nub, bolt, and wedge, to get dirty and pitted. The Riot wrote:......... starting with going direct to the starter with jumper cables........

Re: 6 volt slow turnover
Hello Everybody,
Well here's my report on what I found:
1)First I tried to turn the starter directly with jumper cables and for some reason I didn't have any success with that.
2) Next I started looking at the battery cables and connections and cleaned them up - no appreciable difference after that
3) Next I pulled the starter and pulled the starter switch button - that seems to be the problem, see pics below of the corroded contacts
4) Cleaned switch contacts and reinstalled - Starter turning better but still not real good
5) Charged the battery - Now she's turning like she should..............
6) Showing negative charge on ammeter when running
7) Just got the gen and new VR back from shop - said Gen is good, but will check to make sure it is charging
Believe the VR (brand new) is bad or not adjusted correctly
9) Ordered new Solid State VR from Clover will install along with new ammeter
10) Plan to change battery to higher CCA rating when this one goes out.
Diagnosis : Corroded Starter Switch Contacts and Low charge on Battery, generator not charging battery properly
The good news is that she is starting up a lot better now, but I still have to get my battery charging reliably from the generator.
Thanks all for the help !!

remember to polarize the generator

Did you clean the mating surfaces between the starter and engine while you had it off? That is another "contact" that needs to be good and clean.

Stanton,
I tried to post and thought it was done but obviously not. I will try again to post.
Do you have any hints on posting pics ? I tried to load them from my computer, but I'm now learning it's not that simple.
Thanks,
The Riot

Re: 6 volt slow turnover
All,
On the polarization question: I polarized the gen a few months ago after I pulled it to be checked at the gen shop, but will polarize again, thanks inairam
Dale - on clean the case surfaces on the starter and the tractor, it didn't look bad but I will do that when I put new brushes & bushings in my starter. I should have paid closer attention to that - thanks.
Stanton - yes I tried to post pics, and will try again. Struggling with getting them to attach. I can pull them over from my computer, and thought they would attach and go, but no good.
Thanks,
The Riot

"Full Editor & Preview" mode
"Attachments" tab
"Add files" button
Navigate to the picture you want on your computer
Select it and click "open", watch for green checkmark by Status:
Place your cursor and click where you want the picture in your message
Click on "Place inline"
Select "Preview" to see your picture and whole message.
This is the way I do it. I'm not a fan of drag and drop.

Re: 6 volt slow turnover
Hello Everybody,
Well if you are seeing pictures it means I finally figured out how to post them, thanks Scrivet.
Here's the pics I promised earlier:
Diagnosis: The Starter Button Switch Contacts were definitely in bad shape - that was the primary issue. After cleaning the contacts the starter turned faster, however it still wasn't turning as fast as it should until I put a charge on the battery. Issue number 2 is with the charging system, the generator and the VR, after I put a good charge on the battery and with the clean contacts she was turning great.
Solution: 1)Clean all contact points, cables, battery posts, switch contacts, etc. 2) Test Gen and make sure it is charging - correct as necessary.
Other options:
1) Replace brushes, bushings and clean armature on starter
2) Replace VR with SS VR - I have one on order with Clover
3) Replace battery with one rated for higher CCA with this one dies
Thanks to all for your great help and suggestions. I hope that this exercise has been helpful to others.
Regards,
The Riot

Re: 6 volt slow turnover
With 6 volt, I'm not sure how much choice you will have regarding CCA. You may want to invest in a battery maintainer, your 6 volt will last several years longer if kept fully charged all winter.

Re: 6 volt slow turnover
Bob,
That's a good idea, putting it on a trickle charger. I did find a 6V Interstate battery that has 525 CCA, what I currently have is 440 CCA.
The other big issue for me is to make sure that my generator and or the VR are actually charging my battery. Still working on that issue.
Thanks,
The Riot

Are you both on the same page here? It looks to me like you are talking about two similar but different devices. To me, a battery maintainer is a more sophisticated device than the simple constant voltage output of a trickle charger. I have seen trickle chargers, with prolonged use, boil acid levels to below the plates and ruin batteries. I have never seen that with a maintainer. The Riot wrote:..... putting it on a trickle charger.....
