Slow Leak in Tire of Model 100 Manure Spreader
Hi all,
I just bought a Model 100 manure spreader with a slow leak in one of the tire inter tubes. The guy who sold it to me said the leak was in the valve stem of the tire. So I'm not sure what to do about it. I need it soon and I'm not sure if I want to keep pumping the tire up every so often. Any advice would be great, thanks!

Put a new tube in it.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Re: Slow Leak in Tire of Model 100 Manure Spreader
Around the stem or through the valve?
Take the valve cap off and squirt some soapy water on/around the stem. See where the bubbles come from. If it comes through the valve, put in a new core. (A good cap could be a band-aid.) If it comes around the stem, the leak could be from anywhere and require a full-blown break it down and fix it.

So if I need a new tube, can someone point me in the direction of what kind of tube to get, and how in the heck I would replace it?! Super newbie here, thanks

Best bet is to remove the wheel and take it to a rural tire shop if you're not familiar with removing a tire. The people at Discount Tire, Walmart, Pep Boys, etc will probably not be familiar with what you need and are unlikely to have a tube on hand.
If you want to try to replace the tube yourself, here is a video:
Tubes are ordered per the tire size. You can find them on amazon.com, order through your local tire shop, or do an internet search. http://www.millertire.com is a reputable place to get ag tires and tubes.

Rural tire shop is your best bet. They may not have the correct size tube on hand, but will be able to obtain one. May take several days for the tube to be delivered to the tire shop.Urbish wrote:Best bet is to remove the wheel and take it to a rural tire shop if you're not familiar with removing a tire.
Replacing the valve core is a do it yourself, inexpensive task. The tool can be purchased from any auto parts store as well as valve cores and caps. Probably less than $5- for the valve core tool and several valve cores and a valve stem cap or two.
If the tube is leaking air, you can use "Slime" or similar product for tubed tires to temperately fix the flat. Another auto parts store product.
After thought. Have one of your farmer neighbors come over and check the tire. If you know where the leak is occurring, he may show up the valve core tool and a valve core.
I have an excuse. CRS.

The original tires were 5.50 x 16. If you've never changed one before, it can be frustrating. Pinch the tube, take out and patch again....

Some of the video reminded me of the saying "The Lord looks out for fools and little children". Fortunately, I'm living proof. But I don't make videos and usually nobody sees my dumb moves! John

Sorry guys. I skipped through the video before posting. I'll scrutinize more carefully in the future. I suppose the main takeaway is, "The guy in the video is doing it the WRONG way." Don't do it that way.

Re: Slow Leak in Tire of Model 100 Manure Spreader
I like how the guy says, “this is not the safest way to do things” at the beginning and then goes on to say he doesn’t always do things the safe way. That is reason enough for me to find another approach. The way he just tosses the tools around when he starts a procedure make you wonder how many beverages he had before he started.
Maybe we should post this in the how to video forum and title it “How not to change a tire”.

Re: Slow Leak in Tire of Model 100 Manure Spreader
Finally watched the entire video. Instead of trying to demonstrate how to change a tube, should take a couple of classes first.
Not a good idea to put a new tube in a tire that has a puncture in the old tube, without first finding and removing what ever punctured the old tube.

Then we'd have to make an itemized list of all the things wrong in the video. Didn't news papers have an item on the comics page where you looked for all the things wrong in a drawing?
I guess this is a start:

The Jenga game under his jack was the first thing that really got my attention, followed by his suggestion to use a cinder block instead.
