1968 IH Cub paint color areas

Postby Stevetractor » Sun Jan 15, 2017 5:06 pm

Hello everyone. Just working on readying a 68 for garden duties and will be painting. Just would like some insight into what color paint goes where. I'll start with what I think I know and feel free to add opinions. I'd like to keep as close to factory as posssible.
Rear rims silver
Centres, front rims, and weights white
Hood and grille screen white
Dog legs, grille surround, and dash yellow
Chassis including drawbar, starter, generator,
Battery ignition unit, fan shroud, battery box, seat post, tool box and fenders yellow.
Questions???
Steering wheel spokes, light switch knob (looks black) seat pan, fuel, rad, and air cleaner cap, I would assume yellow but I'm sure someone knows for sure. Thanks a lot to everyone

Steering wheel spokes - black, light switch knob - unfinished, seat pan - black, fuel (I assume you mean cap) - white, radiator - yellow overspray (don't paint the fins), air cleaner cap - white. Everything else you mentioned is correct. Things you didn't mention... radiator cap - unpainted, hydraulic control lever quadrant - galvanized/silver, wheel lug bolts - unfinished, all hood and grille attaching hardware - unfinished.

Hi,
I have an IH brochure for that style of Cub. It shows the air cleaner cap should be white. :)

Thanks for the replies all. Interesting pic from tst. Battery ignition unit is black a well as coil. Assume coil bracket left galvanized color. Must have been put on after chassis paint.

Just an update. Sandblasted and painted front and rear wheels. Front rims never had weights and rear ones had a thin layer of red oxide covered with federal yellow plus a coat of some yellow brush on stuff. First two layers look factory but thought they were supposed to be white? White is what they are now anyways even though my little guy thought they looked better when they were yellow :{_}:

It's really hard to differentiate "factory" paint from an old repaint, so I really wouldn't put much faith in what I see as having any originality to it at all.

Hello all. Spring is almost here. Just had a couple of questions on Cub cultivator paint colors. The front mounts I'm pretty sure are white. The tool bars, front and back, are black as well as the clamps, hillers, and cultivators. What I'm not sure about is the front and rear spring rods. Also the bar that bolts to the rear lift arm that lifts the rear gangs. Any hep would be appreciated

The front and rear spring rods are white (same as the front mounting frames). Never saw an original late rear cross bar, assume it is white.

Note: This is for the later white/black cultivators. Earlier ones had different colors.

Sounds logical Jim. Thanks for the quick reply. Wish I could post some pics but can't seem to with my iPhone. I'm much better at 50's technology than today's

Does anyone have contact information for Darrel Darst, the gentleman who does seat upholstery. Wondering if it's cheaper than a new one plus I think it would be correct for a 68 that both the pan and upholstery would be black? All the replacements I've seen are red and silver. Thanks to all

yours could have had black upholstry or silver upholstry. Not sure. I'm also new to hearing that the seat pans were painted black on these models. Does this hold true for all square nose Cubs with the pan seat? I have a 1975 I'm finishing up on that I painted the pan yellow, but I'm not worried about that detail at this point because I had the seat upholstered in yellow/white to see how it would turn out. Looks good.

Good point on the seat colour. I'm not sure black or yellow but the one on tst's pic earlier in this thread is black on black. Farmall boy, who did your seat upholstery and do they paint it before or after? Seems lifting the metal lip would marr the paint.
