Battery What whould Happen
What would happen if I used a 12 Volt battery on a 6 volt tractor, and by accident reversed the polarity?

Re: Battery What whould Happen
I don't think it would do damage, unless you keep it energized for a length of time. Then heat would be a problem.

I jump start them a lot using 12 volts, but I hook them positive to chassis. I don't run them unless I've don't the conversion. I do something on all my cubs that a lot of folks don't, is I put a 10 watt diode in line from ignition to distributer. Just because I have a bunch of them. No charging you condenser backwards

Explain what you mean by used a 12 volt battery on a 6 volt tractor.gjpgonzo wrote:What would happen if I used a 12 Volt battery on a 6 volt tractor, and by accident reversed the polarity?
Do you mean using the 12 volt battery to jump start the tractor or to permanently install the 12 volt battery?
The starter is a universal motor, meaning it will only turn in the correct direction to start the tractor. Doesn't make any difference how the battery is grounded. The 6 volt starter will work on a 12 volt system.
The ignition system will work with either polarity. But prolonged 12 volt use without adding a ballast resister to the coil will burn up points.
The condenser is a storage device for electricity. Used to reduce arcing at the points when they open and to quickly discharge, helping to fire off the coil. Condensers work with electricity flowing in any direction, positive to negative, negative to positive.
I have an excuse. CRS.

In addition to Eugene's last comments, with which I agree, the only other issue would be the light bulbs would burn out quickly with 12 volts applied.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Re: Battery What whould Happen
Sorry if I gave you the wrong information. I like to see things work as they were engineered, a DC motor will run in either direction, the parts are labeled plus or minus for a reason. There is a reason for a six volt chassis positive, adding two more volts to a battery makes the efficiency more desirable with a chassis negative. Things will work either way . Nails and baling wire helps also. Good day to all.

In my case, back in my young and ignorant stage, I connected my 6 volt with negative ground. The charging system wouldn't work. I couldn't figure out why the battery was always dead.
Why is there never enough time to do the job right, but always enough time to do it over.

Re: Battery What whould Happen
A DC motor that uses permanent magnets for the field, such as many of the later starters, blowers, fans, etc. will run in either direction depending on polarity. One that uses electricity from battery to power the field, such as the older starters, etc. will always turn the same way no matter the polarity.les king wrote:...... a DC motor will run in either direction, .......
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Re: Battery What whould Happen
You are correct, without rewiring the starter will rotate in the same direction. I am just stating that DC motions can be wired to rotate in both directions.
