Good evening
Finally got Pumpkin (orange painted Hwy Department 48 Cub) running around. This cub has mowed for over forty five years. All the repairs to date have been honestly straight forward and made that much more simple by all the info on these pages. Thanks to all!
I have a clicking in 1st and reverse plus there is a bad bearing sound. Second and third are quiet.
I have pulled the shifter cover and fixed the broken shifter fork for 1st/reverse still the click and noise.
By the notes glued under the gas tank I found the final drives where done in 1994 so would like to leave them intacted on the transmission if I can.
Questions
If I split the transmission from the bell housing can I pull the first and reverse speed sliding gear out the "front" of the transmission housing?
Can I get both bearings for that main shaft out that way as well?
Thx
Ken

Re: Transmission 1st/reverse clicking
Hi,
As far as I know, you have to remove the first and reverse sliding gear from the top, up through where the shifter goes.
The front ball bearing comes out with the long clutch shaft. It is tight on the shaft usually. There should be a lock ring next to the bearing. The parts book pic is below.
The rear bearing on the top shaft has to be removed from the rear, as far as I know. The rear bearing is in the transmission case. Here are pics from TM Tractor.
While you have the clutch shaft out, you should check or replace the PTO pilot bushing in the rear of the shaft. Check the PTO shaft where it goes in the PTO pilot bushing to be sure it is smooth.
Be sure to put it together with the bulged side of the trans front seal retainer facing into the trans, so it holds the front bearing into the case. Then the seal lip is facing towards the trans.
Here are listings and pics at TM Tractor.

Re: Transmission 1st/reverse clicking
THanks very much Glen
Sounds like I should bite the bullet and fully take the transmission out.
Might as well redo all the bearing and seals at the same time
Hoping to find the clicking either broken or chipped bearing I am guessing.

Re: Transmission 1st/reverse clicking
Examine the first / reverse slider gear closely. Most likely it is the problem.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Re: Transmission 1st/reverse clicking
Had a "clicker" myself, turned out to be a cracked reverse idler. No noise unless it was under stress (either in 1st or reverse). Replaced the idler--no more noise.

Re: Transmission 1st/reverse clicking
Carefully check the shifter fork. Bent? Once I had a Cub shifter fork to break and I welded it back together. Alignment was imperfect and the transmission clicked. The fork did not fail again but replacing it eliminated the click.

Re: Transmission 1st/reverse clicking
I had one one time as well fork was ever so slightly touching the 1st reverse slider gear. Just needed adjusting up on shift rod. My mistake as I had just rebuilt transmission and differential. I've done 3 of these now and once you start may as well do the whole thing. 60 year old bearings are seldom still good unless impeccable maintenance and no water ever!!! Don't forget bushing in reverse idler. If it's worn it will make gears loud. I also turn the shaft it runs on 180 degrees after I change the bushing and have it reamed. There are a ton of good articles on here about little things to do to make a rebuild good for another 60 years.

Thank for all the great tips. Drove pumpkin into the garage with a concrete floor. Hope to have a detailed look in a few days.

Re: Transmission 1st/reverse clicking
Hi,
If you split the Cub at the transmission, or engine, wedge the front axle before beginning the work. Cubs are heavier on the left side, and can tip over when you split them, or remove one or both final drives. Removing one final drive at a time is better, keeping one rear wheel and tire on the tractor.
Make wood wedges like in the pic below, and drive them into place with a hammer. Check them some during the work to be sure they don't come loose or fall out.
I think you need to cut off the pointed end a little, so the wedge will go in far enough. Pic taken by Dale Finch.

Re: Transmission 1st/reverse clicking
The wedging is going to happen. That's why it's in the garage with a concrete floor safer the the tractor shed with gravel.
I hope to start soon. Cold weather coming. Going into the upper 20F so the feilds will be not workable but the cub will be.

Re: Transmission 1st/reverse clicking
Well got into the top for a good look
Problems
1. Broken tooth on the 1st/reverse slider gear.
2 1st/reverse shifter fork which I welded is rubbing so adding to the noise
Going to jack it up and have a deeper look and order new parts!
Plus the rear tires decided to show how rotten they are!
The adventure continues
Ken
