Hi Folks
Regarding Johns advice about solving my water leak from the front of the head
Do I need to seal/put PTFE tape on all of the head bolt threads?
Or will sealing the front centre head bolt suffice?
I didn't put any sealant/tape on any of the head bolt threads during rebuild as I wasn't aware of the potential issues - perhaps I should of?
Tried to PM you John but message wouldn't send fro some reason
Regards
Ian

Re: Head Bolts
use a liquid sealer, not tape, on the bolt threads. The head bolt threads go into the water jacket, and coolant can creep up the threads, and out the top.

All bolts that enter the water jacket. (All of the head bolts) I use Permatex Form-A-Gasket.

That works great until you need to re-torque them, then it tears. Go to your local hardware store and get some thread paste sealer (like for natural gas pipe), it will be in a plastic bottle or a can with a brush attached to the lid.

Should have been more specific. Permatex Form-A-Gasket #2. (Remains Flexible) The #1 will harden.

Re: Head Bolts
i use the aviation form a gasket. there are two head bolts that do not enter the water jacket. they go into the exhaust. but i coat them anyway.
Pay particular attention to the front center head bolt, as it is cross-drilled for the air cleaner.

Re: Head Bolts
That aviation form a gasket is great stuff. I use it on both sides of all paper and cork gaskets. Absolutely no oil weeping on new paint as long as u clean it off around where it squeezes out. It doesn't harden so I would assume it would work well on head bolts. FYI it's a permatex product and comes in a jar similar to antiseize with a brush.

Re: Head Bolts
Actually, 2 or 3 of them extend into the manifold ports rather than the water jacket, but I do not discriminate, I use sealer on all of them. I have used the TFE paste for the last few, but the PermaTex Aviation gasket stuff is good too. Remember, any thread compound reduces friction, so you need to torque to a little less than the 45 ft/lb in the manual.outdoors4evr wrote:All bolts that enter the water jacket. Re: Head Bolts
I learned that tidbit the hard way a few years ago. I had one that would only leak after it had been shutdown a while, and by the time I came back the next day the trails down the front of the engine would be gone, and the only evidence a few drops under the front of the tractor. i finally used one of Eugene's tricks, putting some talcum powder on the front and looking for the trails in the powder. I pulled the head to look for a crack, and discovered the holes were cross drilled. Later I found a diagram showing it in one of the manuals, but don't remember where now.

Re: Head Bolts
Yeah, now I know this it all makes sense - I have googled "Permatex Form-A-Gasket #2" and its readily available here in the UK so I will order some now and get it early next week, get the job done and try and start it for the first time since rebuild - then I might be back on here asking you guys more questions!! hahaha! - I like the talcum powder idea - superb!!
