Removing Hood on a 76

Postby StaffordCub » Mon Feb 20, 2017 1:39 pm

In the process of removing the hood on my 76, I found that the headlight plugs will not pull through the grommet holes in the side of the hood. Do I need to clip the wires? Thanks for any help on this.
This is my first post as a new member. I am honored to be part of such a neat group of people.

Take a small screwdriver and insert it in the light socket behind the contact. Push it in as far as it will go. Do this with each wire.

With the screwdriver in, pull the wire out on the backside of the socket.

You may need to slightly bend the small tab away from the contact when you put the contact back in the socket. Make sure you labe each wire so you put them back in the right hole.
It is common sense to take a method and try it. If it fails, admit it frankly and try another. But above all, try something.

You do not need to completely disassemble the hood/grille unless you are breaking it down to repaint. Take off the radiator and air filter caps. Take the wiring harness out of the clips. Remove the four screws at the dash, the four screws at the bottom of the grille sheets and the two screws that go into the spacers and lift it right off.

The POs on both my 65 and 75 cut the light wires and just left them that way.
