Confused about the Gas tank/Hood

Postby PoconoCub » Sat Mar 04, 2017 7:00 pm

My wife picked up a 1949 Farmall Cub for me today, it runs Great and there is No noise coming from the Trans or Rears which kind of shocked me as my 48, 53 and 57 are all make noise.

While going over the tractor I noticed that the hood doesn't seem right, so I looked up 49's and every photo I can find shows a different hood then what is on my 49

IMG_4586-small.JPG

It looks like it has holes in it for a metal emblem and the 3 ribs are missing like in all the other 49 photos, but it is also missing the indentation like on the 57 where the emblems go so I am confused as to what year hood this would be.

Hi,
If the hood has flat sides, it is from a later 1958 - 1964 Cub. It originally had metal plates with the names. Here is a page from the 1959 Cub owner's manual showing the hood.
The Cubs looked like in the pic from later 1958 - 1964.
In your pic, it looks like it has 1 tube for the Touch Control, hopefully there are 2 tubes. :)

The holes for a '57 would be two rows in a straight line.
Farmall Cub or international Cub using 4-5 holes on the bottom and two more holes above for a 5" McCormick emblem (Farmall had the emblem, International Cub just had the holes  ) thinking this is from a '59 & up round nose Cub as they had a large plate that read Farmall or International. The plate was large enough that the holes placement looks right.
Mike
Ps- 58 was a split year with the earlier half sporting badges and grill like the 57 and the second half looking like the 59.

Yes, 59 and up.

There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

The hood sides are flat, I never thought of looking past 57 since it has a vertical exhaust. I will go over it better tomorrow if it isn't so cold and windy to see if the hole was drilled out for the exhaust. I also want to check all the castings.

Yes there are 2 tubes for the touch control and it works although the TC is from 56 according to the casting numbers.

Someone must have cut a hole for the vertical exhaust, I will have to go over all the casting numbers now to make sure it is a 49 and not just a replaced bolster with a 49 serial plate.

Could be an optical illusion but the hole for the exhaust does not look like it is directly above the exhaust manifold.

Hi,
My original 1961 Farmall Cub brochure says that the vertical exhaust was still available. The under axle exhaust was available too. :)

Nice of your wife! Congrats.

Maybe a previous owner wanted a vertical exhaust rather than underslung and swapped hoods with some one?

I have a vertical exhaust on my '58 Lo-Boy.
Prior owner cut a hole in the hood and the exhaust hanger is still under the platform from the underslung pipe. The original pipe costs quite a bit more than a threaded pipe poking through the hood when a replacement is needed.

Not having underslung seems to make it more appealing , and vise versa I guess.
Vertical did let me know when the touch control was leaking quickly though ,cough ,cough ,splatter.,splatter. :surrender:

When I first realized that my tractor wasn't supposed to have a vertical exhaust I thought well I'll keep it that way, it's the way a proper farm tractor ought to look!

But...a few years and many jobs down the road, I'm seeing it differently. Dale Finch's Cubs all have the underslung exhaust and she said she's not a big fan of exhaust in her face. I agree.
The replacement underslung pipe is expensive too.

Waif, I'll second that part about the touch control overfilling the crankcase. I've seen that splatter, splatter, smoke and wouldn't you know it had to be at a show when I discovered it. Needless to say, I didn't participate in the parade. I have since changed the shaft seal in the hydraulic pump. ...Frank

I agree the underslung pipe is too expensive, what I did on my 57 was get SS Flex Tubing and cut out the rotten part of the pipe and bent the flex tubing into shape and it works great. One day I might be able to get a new pipe but until then the flex pipe will do.

As the vertical exhaust on the 49 I plan to use a longer pipe so that the exhaust is not in my face.
