New to me '52 Cub with a bad starter

Postby Carolinarednek » Fri Mar 24, 2017 8:19 pm

I'm purchasing my first Cub tomorrow. The guy I'm buying it from has converted it to 12v, but the starter is bad. He sent it off to be rebuilt, but was told that it was toast. He ordered another starter, but it is physically too big for the tractor. I'm trying to find one that is new, used, rebuilt, whatever. I want to keep it as close to OEM as possible. My grandfather had a Cub before he passed away, so I want to try to keep this one as much like his as possible. Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Hi,
JP Tractor Salvage, at the bottom of the page, might have a used starter for a Cub, or you could put a want ad in "The Vine" section of this website. Go to the Board Index at the top of the page to get to The Vine. :)

Since your "52" cub is already converted to 12v, don't overlook maybe using a 12v starter, the cost is usually less than a 6v starter and might serve just as well. Did you get the starter that was supposed to be bad? They are rebuildable, if you can find an "old time" starter/generator/alternator shop that's been around for a while.

Hi,
Stan, Jim B. and I discussed once putting a 12 volt starter on an originally 6 volt Cub. He thought the block may have been changed when they changed to 12 volts, to make more room for the bigger diameter starter. The 12 volt starter is a bigger diameter than a 6 volt starter.
They also need the newer water pipe by the starter, it has an indent so the starter will fit. Here are pics of it from TM Tractor. The indent is where the arrow is. :)

I was thinking about the starter bendix drive gear fit to the ring gear. TC37F shows the same part number fits all, 84T so I believe that would not be a problem. I have a 12v on a '76 that I can try on a '52 and see if it will work. I'll post back on the results. Quite possible that a 12v starter is a bit larger in diameter because of the 4 field coils vs 2 on the 6v starter.

I purchased a 6 volt starter from steiner that did not fit on my 49 and they did not take it back. Last thing I purchased from Steiner.

If you can not find anyone local to you do a rebuild the starter and that is what you decide to do Trappe Auto Electric & Battery 365 E 7th Ave, Trappe, PA 19426 Phone: (610) 489-6378. The owner of the shop owns a Farmall A. The starter was rebuilt previously by someone else but was still troublesome. Trappe got it working great.

Be sure to try another repair shop.

Well, I got it home today. The guy gave me a hand crank to start I with. It runs great and has 20 psi oil pressure at idle. He has ordered a new starter for it and will have it to me by the end of this coming week. I got the 60" mowing deck and an 18" plow that's never been used all for $1500. I love it. My daughter and I have been driving it around the yard and having a grand old time. I'll keep everyone posted on how the new starter is and any part numbers if anyone needs it.

Hi,
Glad you got the Cub to run.

That's really too bad they would not take back the starter, inairam, if it was the wrong starter.

To change to the 12 volt starter, you would also need different battery cables, and a switch, like the newer Cubs used. There is no switch on top of the 12 volt starter. :)

Glen wrote:. . . look and see if the clearance for the starter cast into the block is the same on both engines. . . .

No "if" on that. The R8 version of the block was changed for starter clearance. That is why the oil filter cover bolt changed -- the update altered the bottom of the filter cavity.

What I don't know is how close to fitting the 12-volt starter is with a 6-volt block. Maybe 7 or 8 would fit, then the next one not.

Jim, thanks for the tip on the R8 block. RE my post above (about trying the starter), I'll check the part # on the block for the revision number as well. Stan

Got my new starter today from Yesterday's Tractor. The old switch fit right on the new starter and it starts great!! Pull the starter rod and within a second it fires right up. Thanks for the input on the starter guys.
