Hi
I finally got my Cub started after total nut and bolt rebuild over two years! And I am pleased!
Runs well with choke on - but splutters and the idle speed fluctuates with choke closed? problem in the carburetor?
Its a Solex French carburetor (French Cub) I did have it solar blasted so maybe something stuck in there?
One other question please - on the hand accelerator there are 12 positions (teeth if you like)
My Cub idles fine (with choke) at position No: 1 but it only goes up to position 7 (of 12)
I can make it rev harder by moving the throttle rod from the cross-shaft to the carburetor but should the accelerator handle not travel all the way to position/tooth No:12?
What does your Cub do?
Regards
Ian

Check the gasket between the carburetor and manifold for air leaks. If no leaks are found the main jet has to be cleaned.
The throttle limits are set by the screw on the lever on the governor. Adjusting that screw adjusts the max RPM so adjust to max RPM not to get full range on the throttle. You also have to adjust the rod between the governor and the carburetor.
The service manual under fuel system does a nice job explaining the adjustments: pdf manuals, farmall cub, service manuals, #2 fuel governor?
Question: is this a French Cub?

When you only have 9 horsepower you need to know the names of all of the ponies!

Yes.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Re: Hand Accelerator
On Cubs, it's very common that the throttle will not travel the entire length of the quadrant. As mentioned above, the maximum engine speed is adjusted by the stop screw on the governor housing. If the RPM is set correctly, ignore the limited travel.

Re: Hand Accelerator
Hi,
I would use an automotive test tachometer, and connect it to the coil, and check the high and low speeds. Not sure what year your Cub is, 1950's, I remember. The high speed might be on the serial number plate. 1800 RPM should be close, if not right. Don't speed it up too much trying to use all the notches on the throttle.
The slow idle is 475 RPM, the Cub service manual says.
