ELECTICAL PROBLEM SOMEWHERE. HELP!!!!!!

Postby 1959 Farmall Cub » Sun Apr 02, 2017 9:34 am

I have a 1959 cub and when i charge the battery (6 volt positive ground) up it will start the tractor :D . However, the second time you try to start it you get nothing at all, not even a spark  . I am wondering if this is the Battery, Starter, or wiring harness. Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Where in the system are your reading "no spark"? At the spark plugs or at the starter?

Does the starter engage at all the second time around?

Reading no spark at the starter. If your lucky you may get a single click the second time.

Welcome.

I would start at the battery. Charge up the battery, wait several hours. Test voltage across battery terminals. Test voltage across battery terminals while cranking over the engine. Approximately 5.5 volts while cranking engine, battery good. You can take the battery to an auto parts store to be tested.

Next step would be to check the generator output while engine is running. There are additional checks/test on the electrical system.

Clean up the battery terminals and cable terminals, and battery cable ground.

As Stan suggests, we need more information.
I have an excuse. CRS.

You can pull the battery and take it to a local auto parts store and get it tested for free. Just charge it up first.

Thanks for the replys guys. I just borrowed my neighbors battery and started the tractor on his battery. When I turned the tractor off I put my battery there and the tractor would not turn over. I am going to go into town tomorrow and buy a new battery in hopes that this will correct my problem. Thanks again!

if it happens with a new battery the starter may be binding when it gets warm. i had a starter that did that. the bushing were messed up.

I'm in complete agreement with Eugene. But, while you are back there with the battery, disconnect both battery cables and check for continuity between them. You're looking for short circuits that would lead to the battery discharging between uses, and any reading other than "Open Line" means that you have one.

Ok, it is a little confusing as to what, exactly, is going on here, at least to me.

WHEN do you attempt to start it the second time? Immediately after shutting it off? The next day? A week/month/year/decade/century later???

If immediately, then it is almost certainly a bad cable connection. Even bad batteries do not go flat dead that quickly. You need to disassemble clean all battery posts, and every cable connection between the battery and the starter. Clean, bright, and tight is the name of the game. Every connection, from the ground cable to the starter. I can't emphasize this enough.

Battery cables can become corroded internally, so you might have a bad connection where you can't see. If there is any evidence of green/white corrosion, or black wire disease, in the main battery cables, replace them.

I have seen this problem so many times due to a simple bad battery cable or dirty connection.

Thanks for all the input guys! I purchased a new battery today and the problem is solved. Also picked up some battery terminals just in case. Thanks!

If you are going to replace the battery terminals, may I suggest you get the ones that are pre-soldered, that you heat with a propane torch. You must clean the cable of all corrosion or "coating" (like shellac?), then "tin" it by heating it and applying solder to the wires, with good deep penetration. THEN, heat the fitting until the solder is liquid and insert the cable end, waiting until the solder on the cable end is also melted.

First, this avoids the corrosion that usually accumulates under the clamp-style ends. Second, it looks neat and tidy, especially if you add some heat-shrink tubing over the connection.
