Re: Cub not running, need some advice.
Round hood in 63...that one you have there is a nice find....and much newer
Number one problem I have had with stalling...clogged main carb jet. Telephone wire is your friend. Pull the pipe plug on the bottom of the carb bowl...you should get a pretty good flow of gas. If you get water first, then gas, it may start and run after you clear the water. If not good flow, you could have a sticking float...light tap on the carb sometimes Unsticks it. Once you know you have good flow...go after the main jet if it still won't run.
When you go to buy plugs, steer clear of the champions...I've gotten amazing service life without fouling out of the autolites. 3116, I believe. Dealer has been most cost effective for points kits for me. Don't forget to oil the fan hub....

Re: Cub not running, need some advice.
Hi,
ntrenn, IH changed to the square front hood style during 1963. Part of 1963 had rounded front hoods, and part of 1963 had the newer square front hoods.
The first style of square hood Cubs were still Farmall Cubs, like BenM's in this post appears to be.
Here is a page from the Cub parts book showing the 2 styles, and it gives the serial numbers when they were made.
The info on this website says that 1963 was from serial number 221383 - 223452. The first square front hood was at serial number 222501.
The first yellow and white International Cub was serial number 224705, Raymond Durban's Data Base on this website says that also.

Re: Cub not running, need some advice.
Really helpful stuff so far. I got the oil and filter changed, the old gas and gas bowl cleaned out, and the oil bowl on the air filter. I found, after I got the hood off, that the choke wasn't connected in the back. Had to replace the screw but got that fixed. My big holdup now is getting the alternator belt on. My sockets won't fit in the space and I don't think I have a wrench that will fit. The edges look a little rounded already. Does anyone know the size of this bolt? Also any tips on getting it off would be apprecieated. I have some rust penetrant I am going to use before I try it.
Now that I am looking at the pic a little closer it looks like that bolt is sitting in a ridge and isn't going to turn... not at home to go look, how would I get the new belt on?
Edit* forgot to say thanks to everyone for the wonderful information I am getting here. You guys this has been so much easier with your assistance. Thank you all.

Re: Cub not running, need some advice.
Don't try to turn the nut on the shaft, you'll probably break the "yoke" that holds the shaft then will have to replace the front engine cover. The fan shaft has "flats" on the forward side of the "yoke" that will accept a thin open end wrench. You can change the belt with the fan/shroud/radiator in place, just have to work it around in the limited space. Good Luck. Stan

Re: Cub not running, need some advice.
Hi,
Good that you got the choke rod hooked up again.
I would oil the throttle linkage,it is easy to see with the hood off. The pivot on the governor, that the spring is attached to, commonly gets tight from no oil. Oil both ends of it, move the throttle back and forth several times, then oil it again, to work some oil in, the shaft goes all the way through the part, and is probably dry.
I was looking at the 1963 Cub owner's manual, it tells about replacing the belts and shows the belt tensions on page 22. You work the belt over the fan blades one blade at a time, to get it on or off.
If you are changing the Touch Control fluid, the 1963 manual has mistakes in it. The last paragraph on page 58, about the strainer, and the first 3 paragraphs on page 59, are not for a Cub, they are for some other model of IH tractor. There is nothing like they are talking about on a Cub.
Then on page 59 there is no paragraph number 4, it goes from 3 to 5. Paragraph 4 tells how to get the air out of the system after changing the fluid.
Here is a page from another Cub owner's manual telling how to remove the air. It is in paragraph 4.
If you are going to check the fluid, check it only with the arms in the rear or down position, the fluid rises in the unit as the arms go to the rear. It will look low if you check it with the arms ahead.

Re: Cub not running, need some advice.
The "nut" on the shaft FORWARD of the "yoke" is what you turn...it is 13/16" and your box wrench needs to be fairly thin. I ground a wrench down to fit in the gap. As you observed, the nut on the REAR is captured between the forks on the "yoke" (which is actually a cast part of the front cover) to PREVENT it from turning. I put another box end wrench on it, just to be sure it DOESN'T turn and crack the engine cover.

Hi,
Yes, it's good to lube the fan hub, like ntrenn said above. It tells how in the 1963 Cub owner's manual on page 23, and has a pic of how the hub is made inside. It uses motor oil.

Re: Cub not running, need some advice.
Hi,
Hehe, I haven't really memorized all of them, Dale. He has a 1963 Cub, so I looked through the 1963 owner's manual some. IH removed some info out of the owner's manuals in the late 1950's and then put it in again by the time the 1965 owner's manual was made.
The 1/5/55 owner's manual has more info than most of the owner's manuals after then, up to 1965. My opinion.

Re: Cub not running, need some advice.
Late '50s, IH published the PM manuals that covered a lot of what had been in the owner's manuals.
