Not sure if Cub is charging

Postby ShawnAgne » Wed Apr 19, 2017 8:37 am

While I was mowing yesterday I noticed the voltmeter was deflected to discharge before I started it up, then once I started it up it was just a tad past zero towards the charging side. I admit I've never really paid attention to it but I've thought I've noticed in the past when I was running that it was a lot higher. Is this normal, if not what should I check? 52 cub, battery start, still 6V.

Analog volt meter across battery terminals. Check voltage at different throttle settings. If some where around 7 1/2 volts at mid throttle or more, good to go.
I have an excuse. CRS.

If the battery is fully charged, you won't get much needle deflection.

Percentage from a battery charger is highly inaccurate. You need to measure VOLTAGE while the tractor is running to tell if it is charging or not. If you don't have a voltmeter get a freebie from Harbor Freight.

The tractor will start and run fine for a long long time on a charged battery.

You did not state if you have a voltage regulator (3 position light switch), or a cut out which uses a 4 position light switch. If it is the 4 position switch the 1st position is low charge, and the 2nd position is high charge. If it has a voltage regulator, this may help

While running take the ground off the battery. If the engine dies it is not charging. If it runs it is charging.

Don't do that. Check it with a voltmeter as Eugene described.

With the battery out of the circuit, any of several electrical components could be damaged. A spark when the cable is disconnected could cause the battery to explode.
