Touch Control leaking into block?

Postby cavingreer » Thu Apr 20, 2017 11:24 pm

I believe I've been warned about this being a possibility? My 49 Cub touch control has been sluggish lately. I've completely drained, flushed and refilled it last season, it was really greenish/watery looking. This season it refused to work at all for a little bit, then the air worked out and it started moving. On the next use I noticed it acting up again so I removed the fill plug and couldn't feel any fluid in it. Began to add some and as I'd work it to get air out it would spit out watery looking foam. Just recently was greasing up and checked the engine oil and it's actually a little high. No sign of water but it's definitely higher than it should be. I have a tiny leak in the main rear seal so it should be losing oil not gaining. Guessing at this point the pump is leaking into the crankcase and the water is just condensation in the control body? I've been told that's a common occurrence in tractor hydraulics.

So will this kit from TM rebuild the pump AND seal it from the block?
http://www.tmtractor.com/new/hy/288fp.htm

I notice the kit doesn't include the washer, key and jam nut. Should I also order a washer and nut?
(EDIT) OMG The washer is $40?!

Hi,
If the system was low on fluid, the white foam could be air mixed with the fluid.
The TM Tractor pump kit will work on several different ages of pumps, like it shows in their instructions pictured at the listing. It says in the 3rd pic in the listing, that if you have the 1st style of pump, with an oil seal at the front, that seal is not in the kit, and you have to buy it separately.
Check the fluid level with the arms in the fully down or rear position, the fluid rises as the arms go the the rear position. If you check it with the arms ahead, it will look low on fluid. :)

So far, Paul and Ringo have arrived. John and George were supposed to follow ages ago, but apparently have gone awol. Long story.

Somebody just posted on here recently that they had a run of those washers made. Don't know if there are any left.
I was able to reuse mine, but I wished I had purchased a new key. The nut on my pump was flopping around loose when I rebuilt it. That washer was the only thing keeping it on the shaft and functional. The key therefore was pretty badly worn from the gear rattling around on the shaft.

Can anyone tell me where to find the part number of my TC Pump or how to identify it without taking it off the tractor? The thing does still work and not leaking that bad so I hate to take it off and shut the tractor down until rebuild is done but I can't find a part number anywhere on the outside of the body.

From one of our spnsors, TM TRACTORS:
http://www.tmtractor.com/tm-tractor/ghy/pump_001.htm
or
http://www.tmtractor.com/tm-tractor/ghy/pump2_001.htm
The number is probably under the paint, and on the engine side!

Chances are those 3 items are still good. You may want to pray the washer is still good...check out the price for a new one!!
http://www.tmtractor.com/new/hy/562fp.html
Bob McCarty made/had made some new reproductions....might PM him to see if he still has one.

I believe the only difference between the two pumps was one had an o-ring seal and the other had a lip seal. The o-ring is included in the kit. If yours has the lip-type seal, you must puchase that separately. Several posts about that.

I contacted Bob and he's going to hook me up with the washer. I don't see the 355742R91 lip type seal on TM anywhere?

Someone has that seal number, but yours may just use the o-ring. Wait til someone posts the seal number, then locate a source (NAPA or similar), but WAIT until you get your pump off to confirm what you need.

Don't forget to get some HyTran fluid...I buy it in the 5 gallon jugs, but then I have 4 tractors.

there are several different seals used from an o-ring to two different oil seals. I found this post very helpful when I redid my pump seal.

My pump is Pesco # 051004040-03 and from what I can tell online it's only the one with the -01 suffix that needs the different seal so I should be good.
Anyone notice it being hard to get a socket over the back bottom bolt? Looks like it's a really tight fit between the pump body and bolt?

Yes. It's tight back there. Of the 4 bolts into the pump, 2 are shorter and only hold the halves of the pump together, and 2 are longer and bolt the pump to the block. They are in diagonal pairs. Therefore, once you get the two easy outboard ones out, you'll know which of the two hard inboard ones you need to get out, and which you can leave until you have better access after you get it off.

If memory serves, it is the top outboard and bottom inboard that are the long ones.

Yep it's the bottom inside that's the only hard one to get a socket on and that's the one that holds it to the block
