A month ago my sons cub ran like a clock. Then developed a miss. Through some trouble shooting a and some reapairs and a generator overhaul I got it all back together today. Went to start it and nothing.
More trouble shooting led to no compression. So I pulled the head and have 4 stuck exhaust valves.
Any trick for getting them loose. They haven't been stuck long. And after i get them free are there any special tools for removing them and reaming the guides.

Re: Stuck exhaust valves
Since the head is off before you go too far open up to the valve cover on the side and work the valve up and down. spray some penetrating oil. See if that looses it up.
If you go further and remove the valves The manual give you the sizes of the reams needed.
I went into my 49 last year. I documented some of the tools I found helpful

Re: Stuck exhaust valves
I was looking through my service manual on the C-60 engine and it doesn't give any sizes on what to ream the valve guides to. Just to clean them with a rifle cleaning kit. Does anyone know what size then should be renamed to.
Also for a valve spring compressor what toll do you guys recommend. Will the Briggs and Stratton small engine one work?
Thanks.
Keith.

Re: Stuck exhaust valves
Keith,
in the service manual under the engine, under values is the guide size
Ream size after assembly
in 0.3115-0.3125
exh 0.3115-.3135
With the head off a lot of members recommend the C clamp style. I was not able to get that to work well. I had some success with the B & S style but found it cumbersome. I was most successful with the reverse plier style and a keeper tool. ( see link above). It depends on your skill with tools in tight spaces and your level of patience.
Make sure you stuff a rag in the oil return holes at the bottom of the value area to make sure the keepers and the keeper holders stay out of the oil pan.

Re: Stuck exhaust valves
As far as the valve spring compressor, I have an old Kay-Dee flat head valve spring compressor tool. These can be found periodically on E-bay at a fairly reasonable price.

Re: Stuck exhaust valves
Just an observation, if it was running fine then the valves stuck, as opposed to a fresh valve job then stuck, they probably don't need reaming. They probably just need cleaning.

Re: Stuck exhaust valves
Thank Jim. I'm definitely going to try that first. Then after its running it Williams Ben addition some seafoam or Marvels Mystery oil to it. We use MMO in old round aircraft engines and it works well.

Re: Stuck exhaust valves
Well it turned out That one of the exhaust valves was bad and I needed a new seat in one cylinder as well. I'm hoping it will be done today and I can pick it up and then start bolting things back together.
