Head bolt thread sealant.

Postby J3 Driver » Sun Apr 30, 2017 3:13 pm

So I've been reading on using a thread sealant on he head bolts of my cub. Came across this permeated high temp and looks like the stuff to use. In the instructions it says it may be repositioned up to 4 hours after application.

I've also read that after the initial torque on the head bolts to run the tractor about 10 hours and then retorque the bolts. Won't this break the bolt thread seal. And if I don't retorque the heal bolts will the head gasket start to leak?

What are your guys thoughts on this. Reading the maintenance manual it doesn't say anything about retorquing the head bolts.

Thanks

Keith

I used Permatex 80633 Thread Sealant with PTFE. remains pliable at higher and lower temperatures Seals and resists pressure in air, oil, diesel fuel and hydraulic systems; resists common auto and shop fluids Temperature Range: -65°F to 300°F (-54°C to 149°C)

To tell you the truth I also use it on the cooling systems gaskets to make sure I have a seal.

What is the temp rating of the high temp product?

The high temp stuff is good to 400° I'm sure that other stuff would be perfect. I just didn't see it on their site.

I think you'd be better off using a non-hardening sealer. Yes, without retorquing, you risk a leak.

Hi,
I use Permatex Aviation Form A Gasket, on the head bolt threads, it is supposed to be non hardening. It has a small brush made on the cap. If you buy one, stir it up with a screwdriver or something before using it, it settles in the bottom of the can some, sitting. It works good on gaskets too. They sell it at NAPA.
Some of the guys on here spray the head gasket with Coppercoat sealer before installing it.

Here is a page from the Cub service manual showing the torque sequence, if you don't have the info. :)

The PTFE sealer is usually available at my local auto parts store. If not, next day by ordering/no shipping charge.
