Old style brake pin orientation question

Postby lliberto » Tue May 02, 2017 6:10 pm

OK, I have this old style brake pin

. Can someone tell me if the stepped side goes towards the final drive or towards the differential? All of the diagrams I've seen do not seem to indicate the proper orientation.

Thanks

Hi,
The spacer should go toward the transmission, it looks like in the Cub parts manual, here is a page showing both styles of brakes. They have the spacers facing toward the trans in the pics. Number 7 in the pic is an older style of spacer that was not made on the rod, I believe. :)

Hi,
You didn't say if you are working on the 1947 or 1952 Cub. The parts manual says the separate spacer was used on Cubs serial number 18558 and below. Here is the page after the page I posted above, showing it. Not sure if it matters. :)

The 52 is the one I'm working on.

Well, I went to attach the final drive assembly to the tractor and after cleaning the mounting surface I noticed that the hole the brake pin goes into has a nasty crack. What are my options here?

Weld it is probably your best option. Mine was broke as well, working in a machine shop made fixing it easier for me. You may can add a piece of steel for strength to it, just weld it with a nickel rod if you try to add steel to the cast iron.

Really? Everyone I've talked to around here say they can't do it.

I weld cast with a mig often using co2/argon mix no problem
