Front Bolster

Postby wrz » Sun May 28, 2017 5:20 pm

Picked up a used bolster to replace a cracked one caused by freezing. To my surprise it did not have any rust build up at all. What was found consisted of a thick oil emulsion (1/2 inch) . Cleaned it up scraping and wiping with a rag. The drain plug came out with no trouble. My guess is that the oil came from the engine but why would it build up and lay on the bottom? It still has lots of the original paint on the inside for an early 50"s ( Y code).

Front main leaking and the dirt mixed in with it is my guess.

This build up was on the inside where water is at the bottom of the radiator .

Could have had head gasket problems and they put stop leak in it and since the Cub doesn't have a water pump it sank to the bottom. It could have had a head gasket leaking oil into the water, not common but it does happen.

Someone may have put something in the coolant to lubricate the nonexistent water pump. It happens more often than you would expect.
