Update: replaced the head gasket and used copper gasket spray, new head bolts and ptfe pipe thread sealant on the reassembly. All went well and no leaks so far after 2 hours of mowing.

The old gasket wasn't torn, but it was weak on the one side. Also I didn't see any sealant on it when it came off.

Fingers crossed, and many thanks to those who replied. I'd be screwed without you.

Glad you figured out it was antifreeze without the taste test......
So....if you are brave...you could always try gm seal tabs. I used them on the 65, which already had a braze repair on the head...and it stopped that leak...been using them for seep/weep leaks for almost 15 years....

My dad poured a can of black pepper in his old gleaner combine once and it stopped a water leak on it but it did have a water pump.
