Steering shaft length difference?

Postby inairam » Wed Jun 14, 2017 5:53 am

I just noticed my early Cub have about 1 inch between the steering support and the steering wheel while a 65 loboy and 75 Cub have about 4-5 inches ( both have deluxe seats)

I know there was a change in the early 60s to a 24 tooth gear for steering (two part numbers listed in the parts manual) did they also change the length of the steering shaft? Or does it have to do with the deluxe seats? deluxe seat got a long shaft for some reason.

has anyone shortened the shaft? any issues doing that?

I keep thinking the seat was why I found it uncomfortable to get on and off my newer cubs with the deluxe seat maybe it is the steering wheel location.

I have shortened a couple when customers wanted the quicker ratio, they wanted it to look factory, so it was cut, rethreaded and put a new keyway in the shaft
