Starter Rebuild Kit?

Postby BenM » Fri Jun 16, 2017 3:21 pm

Can anyone point me in the direction of a rebuild kit for my Cub? The only ones I am seeing are on ebay and I am not really confident purchasing it there.

Hi,
I think I would buy individual parts at a starter rebuild shop, they probably have good quality.
Brushes and bushings are probably about all you need to buy, if the rest of it is good.
The armature should be turned in a lathe, to check if the commutator is round, and not worn out of round, it's easy to clean it turning it in a lathe too.

You have to remove the little cap, or plug it is called in the parts list, at the commutator end of the starter to replace the bushing. Put it in again when you are done, it keeps dirt and water out of the bushing. It is number 20 in the picture below.
Oil the new bushings when putting it together.

I think you were working on the starter switch before, if the contacts are burned too much, it might need a new switch.
Here is a page from the Cub parts manual showing the 6 volt starter. :)

Auto parts store will have the parts needed for a rebuild. Take the numbers off the starter to the auto parts store to obtain the parts Glen mentioned
I have an excuse. CRS.

I bring them to an auto electric rebuilder. I'm not equipped to turn the commutator. Always satisfied with the work they do.

I replaced brushes and bushings on the 6v with ebay parts 5+ years ago. Spent $12 or so. On the 12v starter i took it to a 'reputable' shop. New bendix and new coat of paint cost $150...just last fall.... And i was a "commercial" repeat customer.....
Could have bought all the parts from a site sponsor for less than 50...

The armature should also be checked, I have one with a "dead" spot. If it stops in a certain spot, the starter will not turn over.
