I am restoring my 48 Cub and am ready to paint the engine block. All paint has been removed, the block is bare metal, and I have cleaned it with a wax/cleaner degreaser. I am going to brush paint the block using Case IH2150 PN 991012N Red Paint without hardener. I sure would like to receive some feedback regarding:
1. What the recommendation might be for further preperation of the block before painting; and
2. If priming the block is recommended I would like a recommendation for a primer that can be brushed on if there is such a thing (spraying in my available work space, location and time of year is problematic); and
3. Is it recommended to thin the paint (instructions allow 8:1 paint to thinner)
I hope this issue has been faced before and a suitable solution has been found.
Many Thanks in advance. This forum sure has made my adventure to date possible.

Re: Brush on primer for IH2150 Red Paint?
Use the red oxide primer form Case IH. It can be applied from the can with a brush to rough surfaces in 1 or 2 coats without thinning. Give it some time to dry between coats (30 min.) Keep in mind the same color primer should be used on the rest of it. Don't use gray primer on some parts and red on others. When painted IH2150 red the shade will appear different when primer color varies.

Don't thin the paint that much, for brushing. I believe that that recommendation is for spraying. I agree with Larry, regarding primer.

Thank you all for your replys.
I think I have goofed up pretty bad, how bad I am not sure. I am concerned because I have painted over Dupli-Color 2 in 1 Filler & Sandable Primer, which is a light gray, on everything but the engine crankcase (Group 12, page 8 Ref No. 13). Question is should I risk the shade difference between the resulting paint shade using Red Oxyde primer on the engine crankcase? This will be a working tractor but I sure don't want to create an eyesore if I show it in a County Fair.
Rock and a hard place choice: Paint the red over unprimed crankcase or prime with the Red Oxyde and paint. Heck of time to hit this self imposed problem.

Use the same primer as you used on the rest of the tractor.

i would probably use the red oxide, i think it has better adhesion to the bare cast than the fill primer. Put an extra coat of paint on the grey parts.

Re: Brush on primer for IH2150 Red Paint?
You could brush on the red oxide on the engine then cover it with grey to match the rest of it before painting red top coats. If it's been more than a day since priming use a scotchbrite pad to scuff the primer surfaces. Blow off the dust and wipe with IH thinner before painting red. Don't use store bought thinner because it may not be compatible. I would do 3 to 4 coats but not very heavy to avoid runs. On the last coat it can be a little heavier to get a good shine. Give it time to get tacky between coats.
