mower deck questions
I don't have a cub yet but am sort of waiting for a lo boy to find me when the time is right. A friend has a woods 42" brush hog on his that I'm a little familiar with. I've been looking at CL ads and reading the forums but am a bit confused by the 42" decks. I've never seen the underside in any photos. Are the center decks with only one spindle swing blade (brush hog) style or just a solid 42" blade? Or are they available both ways?
Thanks, Roger
Thanks, Roger

Swing blades.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Re: mower deck questions
Available both ways. Bush Hog (brand name) Model 412 has a single fixed blade. It's about 4 inches wide and about 1/2 inch thick. Works good with small brush and weeds. Downside is they are no longer available and used is hard to find.
The older model has a round rear shape, Later model were angle shaped like the picture above. StanStan in LA (lower AL)

Wow, never knew Woods offered the one piece. I have never seen them in the parts manual.

The owners manual should be there somewhere. I think I forwarded it to someone a few years ago. I still have the info if anyone wants it, send me a PM.

Re: mower deck questions
Stan, I know about the Bush Hog brand, but Roger asked about the Woods 42", which I believe only had the two piece swing blade.

Re: mower deck questions
Yeah, I just re-read the original post. I thought he was looking for any information about the different types of blades, not just for WOODS brand. MY BAD!! Not the first time I have skimmed over a paragraph and missed some of the important details. I even missed it in your reply that clearly says "WOODS". SORRY! 'Coruse, I'm not too hard to get confused, CRIS is getting worse it seems.

Re: mower deck questions
I was looking for info on all the 42" deck types. Maybe I wasn't very clear in my wording. I only mentioned that I was slightly familiar with a friends Woods brush hog. His is a fast hitch rear deck and I've never seen any center deck except in photos. I'm not the greatest at searching the internet, others always seem to be able to find stuff that just eludes me but here in just a few minutes I've now got photos of the underside of several decks. Now the question is can you tell from a photo if the deck has a solid blade or swing blades? I'm sort of casually looking for a lo boy and if it had a center deck I'd prefer swing blades.
Thanks again for the info. Roger

Re: mower deck questions
Look under the deck and it's obvious. Here's a different angle from Barnyard's picture, showing the pivot points on a WOODS 42. You can access the MANUALS at the QUICK LINKS tab at the top left corner of the HOME page. Quite a few manuals there both IH and aftermarket suppliers. Free PDF downloads if you want to save the info. Click on the picture for a larger image.

Re: mower deck questions
Thanks. Just wondering if there are any tell tale signs apparent from the top. More than a few of the cubs I've inquired about belonged to a deceased relative and the seller really doesn't know all that much about it other than it's been in the barn and ran fine last time it was used.

Re: mower deck questions
Some of the WOODS mowers have a "over running" ratcheting mechanism that is a part of the top sheave. The manuals above will help you see which ones. As Barnyard said, I think all WOODS have the two blade, pivot type system.

I Ive got 3 of the 412s, one I bought with the tractor, one I got for 40 bucks off craigslist and one I got for free from a garage sale that said it was off of a riding mower. Mine does great even over 2 inch thick trees as long as you are throttled up. And a machine shop can make you blade for pretty cheap.
Plus it makes a great step for getting on the tractor

Re: mower deck questions
I have a Woods Model 42CL, s/n 1820 on my LoBoy. Swing Blades. Ratchet clutch on top. Woods belt No. 3546.
When you look at the spindle, you can see that the hole in the sheet metal through which the spindle passes the deck is elongated toward the front of the mower.
Like a big "half/slot" maybe 3 inches by 4 inches. That's where you put your socket wrench to loosen the bolt that holds the weird washer so you can remove the pin holding the blade. You'll loosen that bolt, and rotate the washer beneath it until the crescent-shaped cutout in the washer aligns with the head of the pin. Pin will push right up out of there, allowing you to remove the blade.
It can be a tough bolt!! You'll want to coat it with "Never-Seez" when re-assembling.
I've had no problem over the years getting replacement blades. The last pair I bought from Miles Tractor Sales in Baxley, Georgia. In the neighborhood of $50 - $60 bucks a pair, I think.
If the ratchet clutch, or whatever it's called, isn't working properly, the blades of the mower will try to keep the tractor moving after you've depressed the clutch and brake. Make sure it works. Don't over-lubricate this!
Don't over-tighten the belt, either - that's how you learn to change spindle bearings!
So, that's the little bit that I know, (and a catalog of mistakes I've made so you don't have to!)
