61 Cub hydraulics stopped suddenly

Postby ccaissie » Wed Jun 28, 2017 6:49 am

Rehabilitating a cub for farm use. All seems well, but the hydraulics suddenly stopped working. Level seems fine. Can someone point me to a checklist of items to diagnose this? I expect to drain the fluid and start from scratch following a recommended procedure.

I would start with the pump. Make sure the gear on the pump is still attached.

Check the orifice as described in the first paragraph, no need to drain for this check.

Remove the top Allen plug on the block that attaches lines to TC block. That is the high pressure side. If oil squirts out there when engine is running, or cranking over, gear is on pump. If not the gear may have come off the pump due to lock washer not being bent over. That Allen plug will be VERY tight unless it has been removed before.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

I pulled the allen plug and no oil comes out. So there's a start.

You guys are gonna buttkick me. I had the reservoir filled last year, and saw no leakage...so assume it's still full. Wrong...out of oil. Works great.

So where are the potential leaks? I see no change in the engine oil level.

External leaks should be visible after cleanup. If nothing shows up, suspect the pump seal/o ring even though you said no change in the engine oil level. The TC does not take a lot of fluid to fill it up whereas the oil pan is a much greater volume.

Living that nightmare myself...i 'll bet money if you pull the pump you will have a bad gear...which leads to the shaft seal leaking. My original pump failed both the driven gear and the shaft. I'm working with an ebay pump and sleeve retaining compound and a new key (woodruff #3). Hopefully i will get it back together soon..

Hi,
If the hydraulic fluid is leaking from the pump shaft seal into the engine oil pan, you probably won't see anything leaking on the outside of the Cub, unless there are other leaks on the outside of the unit.
Here is a pump rebuild kit at TM Tractor, if you need it. It says it is a Case IH kit. :)

ntrenn, hopefully you are using the lock washer for the pump gear nut, it bends over one flat of the nut to lock it on. Here is a new one at TM Tractor. :)

The washer for the gear nut is available from a forum member for a lot less than $40. Post a want add in the "Vine."

Yep using the lock tab. Everything about the original drive failed...except the lock tab. The gear wore the id at least 0.010, the shaft wore at least 0.005, and the key was half worn in two. For those of you that are lucky enough to just have the seal leak....great. I am sure my seal leak was way down the failure chain. Im just hoping the drive gear is still serviceable. A good pump with a solid drive gear is really worth $100.....
