Hi all,
I have a 55 Cub...My wifes father restored this about 10 years ago. A week ago I got my hands on a C3 Mower and have been putting around the yard with it...Only have used it for about 30 minutes total now. The Touch-Control unit was out of fluid, so I filled it with Hy-Tran. Today I noticed a leak coming from the flange just ahead of the shifter plate...where the tube meets the transmission (for lack of a better way to put it). The fluid looks like Hy-Tran.
I pulled the side plug from the tranny and the fluid is pretty dark so I don't think the transmission is the culprit. Does the hydaulic fluid from the touch control go back that far? Bad seal somewhere?
Here's a pic - the leak is coming from the bottom of that flange.

Re: Oil leak
A leak from the bottom of that flange would indicate one, or both seals on the front of the transmission leaking. Those seals are located right below the arrow in your pic.

Re: Oil leak
Hi,
The Touch Control fluid does not go to the transmission. It only goes to the unit, as far back as the dash.
If you don't see any Hy-Tran fluid leaking on the outside of the unit, or tubes, or pump, the pump shaft seal could be leaking, then the fluid would be going into the engine, and the oil pan. You could see the oil level go up on the dipstick. You could watch that after some running it, and see if it goes up.
Below is a page from the Cub service manual showing the front of the transmission, and the shaft seal, in the lower pic.
The Cub would have to be split at the trans, to replace the seal and retainer, it comes as 1 piece. The shaft goes forward to the clutch, you have to be careful not to bend the shaft when taking it apart.

Re: Oil leak
The seals in the front of the transmission are fairly common leak locations. However, any oil that leaks past them USUALLY won't show up at the joint between the transmission and the torque tube. Check the big bolts that hold those 2 castings together. If they are tight, any amount of oil getting past them seems unlikely. Try parking the tractor pointed steeply downhill. If the front transmission seals are leaking, point it downhill and the accumulated oil will come out of the bell housing hand hole. Absent of those indications, my hunch would be that the gasket for the transmission top cover is leaking. Transmission gears throw oil against the inside of the top cover. It leaks past the gasket and runs forward under the edge of the cover until it reaches the front of the cover.

Re: Oil leak
That's what had me confused- the oil on the floor was clean....the oil in the trans was dirty. I'm thinking the touch control unit is leaking and running back to the flange. Just wiped everything down to see what happens.

Re: Oil leak
Use some type of cleaner, spray carburetor or brake, and clean up the suspected leak area, both sides and bottom of the torque tube, and right side of the engine around the oil filter housing. Run the tractor a bit. Then use some type of white power, eg. talcum, and dust the area. The leak source will show up.
I have an excuse. CRS.
