I noticed when i replaced the points the the distributor shaft had a little bit of play in it. I have another distributor that doesn't have any play but i think it came off power unit, are they the same as far as the advance and there inside parts?

By play do you mean sideways, or being able to turn the rotor shaft forward and back a little? Side play is not good, being able to turn the shaft a little is normal, that is how it gets it advance.
