I have a problem with gear oil seeping out at gasket #20 below to the point where it drips. How difficult is it to replace the gasket and who carries them? Thanks.

Re: Steering leak problem
It is not difficult to replace the gasket but it is a pain due to the weight of the parts. I took off the front axle to get at the bolts. Maybe there is a way not to do that but I do not know.
Before you replace it to look at the fill plug on the bluster. That should be vented. The heat from the coolant is also in the steering box/ bolster which l expand the air and oil in the steering box/ bolster and force the oil out the seal. A new seal will leak is the fill plug is not vented.
Check to see if you can clean the plug and see if there is a vent. A standard NPT plug wlll fit. A PO may have replaced it with a plumbing part and did not drill out the holes - centered from the bottom and on one of the flats for the vent path take a 90 degree bend.

Re: Steering leak problem
Hi,
This may seem like a silly question, but have you tightened the 5 bolts that hold the parts together, sometimes that stops the leaking there.
TM Tractor has a new gasket, and it would be good to replace the lower oil seal, while it is apart, if it leaks any.

Re: Steering leak problem
That tip about the vent is a good one. I went down and checked mine -- no vent. The only two bolts that would budge were the closest to the front. I did tighten them and now I'll drill a vent hole in the plug and see if things improve. Thanks guys.

Re: Steering leak problem
The plug should already have the vent hole. It's probably full of gunk and you can't see it. If you have a wire wheel, clean it off; if not, poke around with a wire until you find it. The hole comes out the center of the "bottom" then turns 90* to come out the side of one of the flats.

Re: Steering leak problem
We have had good luck by draining the steering box and replacing the oil with corn head or cotton picker grease. It is slighter thicker than 90 wt. oil, lubricates just as well, but doesn't leak as much.
TSC stores has it. About $5 per qt.

I've used it before. If memory serves, it's labeled as 'OO' grease. Check the tractor stuff aisle at TSC if interested

That's an interesting idea.

Re: Steering leak problem
So far, so good, after tightening those two bolts and drilling a vent. If it weeps anymore I may drain the 90wt and put in some 140wt I have to see if that helps. I know things on my antique jeep stopped leaking after swapping out the 90wt for the 140wt. I will keep the cotton picker grease in mind, however.

Re: Steering leak problem
When I was rebuilding the steering box on my '50 International L120, the guy who rebuilds them, and who I got my rebuild parts from, recommended refilling with Lucas Hub Oil instead of regular heavy weight oil. I asked why, as inquiring minds want to know! He said because it has "hair". Yeah right. No he said "hair" is that sticky quality when you put a drop between your fingers and squeeze it, then slowly seperate your fingers... it will sting hairs across the gap. Ok! So I put it in and have had zero problems.

I will most likey try it when I am done rebuilding my Cub box.
What do you all think?
Thanks,
FredD

Re: Steering leak problem
I'm always a bit skeptical of anything resembling grease consistency in a steering box. For some years there was a group of people who advocated draining the 90wt out of jeep steering boxes and adding a grease fitting and pumping it full or just filling it with stuff similar to the above product. What we found out over time was because the lubricant didn't flow the movement of the gears eventually pushed it aside. We would open boxes and find the lube pushed all around the inside of the box but little, if any, was still on the gears. I think I might be inclined to go with the 140wt as a next step. Just my opinion.

Re: Steering leak problem
250 wt. gear oil. You might be able to find some still available.
250 wt. was used in the WC Allis Chalmers transmission, differential, finals. Stuff is thick and barely runs but it does run.
