1951 cub (rare) or pieced together?
I bought this 51 cub about 2 years ago, it has a under slug muffler with a hole for the top muffler, it has a fine mess grill, and there is no oiler holes in the hood. I know the under slug came out in 53,but clueless with the rest.

Wouldn't be the first pieced together cub, we've seen.

Hi,
Nice looking Cub in your pictures.
Someone might have filled in the 2 generator oiling holes before painting the hood. You could use a light and look up under the hood from the left side, and see what is there where the holes would be.
There could be something visible, to fill in the holes.
The grille if it is a fine mesh grille, might have been replaced, but the experts on grilles might write something about that.
The under axle exhaust system came out in late 1954.

Thanks for the fast response, I looked under hood and the holes weren't filled in with puddy or patched with metal.

Might have been an expert body man who welded up the holes and then ground off the excess. Unusual but possible. The glass container on the breather cap is not std either (could have been an optional accessory). The earliest cubs had a grill screen that was a closer mesh than yours, I believe. Hi,
Can you see if the paint under the hood, above the engine, and where the 2 holes would be, is new like the outside of the hood, or looks old, like original.

The grille screen is simply welded to the front of the grille frame -- not like factory construction.

Hi,
Below are pics of a Cub grille from TM Tractor, showing how the edge of the grille is put on over the screen.

Good catch, and it looks quite well done too.
Seems like this Cub was worked on by a talented body man.
The underslung exhaust must have come after the body work was done, or else I suspect the muffler hole would have been filled and shaved too.

Re: 1951 cub (rare) or pieced together?
I just checked where the 2 holes where suppose to be there's no indication of any patched work at all! I sanded it down to Bair metal, mybe this hood got by with no punch holes.

Probably a replacement hood, from a 55.

Not with the ribs.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

My 1953 hood has no holes for oiling the generator. Never had them.

Hi,
The pre cleaner on the air cleaner top is interesting, I have seen at least one other one on here in people's pics. I don't find anything about it in IH brochures or manuals, or the parts manual.
Jim B., do you know if IH offered those.
