Old style Mott mower

Postby Paul Van Benschoten » Wed Sep 27, 2017 12:14 pm

I just bought a 1950 Cub with 54A grader blade and a Mott D9 belly mounted mower.

The mower came with a brochure and a manual which seem to be for a newer version of the D9. The pictures do not match how mine connects to the tractor.

There is a picture in the brochure of an Farmall A with a mower attached like mine:

I did some searching and see this referred to as "old style". Is there something bad about this setup like having all the weight on one side of the torque tube?

Nothing bad about it, even the later ones had the weight all on one side due to how the mower lined up off set to the right. The later ones just had a simpler less bulky lift, though it was a little more difficult to make it lift level. The only ones that lifted from both sides were center mounts, and they are pretty rare. Some of the very early ones had a bar that welded to the drawbar brackets which then held the idler pulleys, as opposed to the later ones that had an arm bolted to the left rear corner of the drawbar to hold the idlers.

Mine has the idler pulleys on the bar welded to the brackets:

Last week I posted a question about straightening a bent push rod for a 54A grader blade. Well, the stay rod for this mower needs work also. I don't know what was going on that caused all this. I did look for broken castings and the holes for the implement bolts. No, I haven't fixed the push rod yet (sigh).

Paul, very easy to straighten, locate a blacksmith with a forge. I'll do it for free if you want to pay shipping charges both ways to 78736.

That stay rod may have been bent by a heavy person stepping on it to get on the tractor. Yhey are not all that sturdy side ways.

Hi,
Below is a Mott owner's manual, with parts list. You can look and see if it is for yours. :)

That has the same parts picture as mine with the newer mount and connection to the hydraulic rocker arm.

I've been told by the previous owner that he used the boomerang from the 54A blade for lifting the mower. I'll give it a try this weekend.

Not knowing the print date of the ad, their use of language is amusing to me: "Old Internationals Never Die"

IH has had that reputation for quite a while... :)

I could not find a print date on the three page brochure (6 pages front and back). All the pictures of Cubs were square nose and there is a 125 Cub Cadet.

If there is interest, I can scan the whole thing.

My brochure is similar in appearance to the one Rudi has at http://farmallcub.com/rudi_cub/www.clea ... Mowers.htm

I think my brochure is earlier since it does have a Cub LoBoy while Rudi's has a Cub 154 Loboy. The colors and layout are the same.

Edit: Add link to Rudi's brochure.
