Engine oil

Postby KC2LLW » Thu Oct 05, 2017 7:06 am

Hello,
I see that the Cub engine oil calls for SAE-30 thru SAE-10 depending on the outside Temperature. When I look up these oil weights on Quaker States website they say not for use in gasoline engines? Would I be better off to use a 10W20 oil or a 5W20 Mobil 1 synthetic? Looking to do an oil change next weekend and want to use the best oil possible.
Thanks,
Steve

I use low-ash (recommended) 30wt from the local IH Case dealer.

When I had did my first engine rebuilt on one of my Cubs this was a topic that we discussed. He suggested 15w-40 shell rottella t. His reasoning was that it’s a very good quality oil low in ash and protects like a 40w when hot but pumps and lubricates much better when cold than a straight 30w. Certainly I wouldn’t use a synthetic low viscosity oil as a Cub would burn that quite readily especially if it was a bit worn. Also synthetic oil is much more expensive, and a Cub engine isn’t subjected to the same strains as new car engines. JMHO :tractor:

If you search this forum, you'll find hundreds of posts relating to engine oil. Everybody has different opinions. I run straight 30W in the summer and 10W30 in the winter, both conventional oil.

I run Rotella 15W40 in everything, car, trucks, tractors, mowers, trac-vac. It's much simpler to use one oil than to keep up with what's in what. I've had no problems with anything using Rotella.

I will add.... more importantly, change on a regular basis, drain filter housing, and use new good quality filter.

Thanks, for all the reply's. I do use Rotella 15W40 in my 54 Willys CJ3B and in my 2002 7.3 PSD I also run it in my 2005 NH TC45DA tractor so I guess I will also run it in my 48 Cub.
Thank you,
Steve
